2010 LA AUTO SHOW: Porsche Gets Back To Its Roots, Shows Off Cayman R

2010 LA AUTO SHOW: Porsche Gets Back To Its Roots, Shows Off Cayman R
Well, well, well. Look what Porsche brought to the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. An old-school 356 Roadster, the new-school Speedster, a Boxster Spyder, the new 911 GTS and what's the last one?

Oh yeah, the Porsche Cayman R.

We didn't see that one coming. Nope, not at all. We only said the Cayman R would show up last Thursday.

If you haven't been listening to us for the past week, the Cayman R is essentially a Boxster Spyder in Cayman form. Not much else to it!

Look for this baby to hit showrooms in February 2011 around $66,000 smackers. If it drives anything like the Boxster Spyder -- which it will -- 00R highly recommends that if you have the means, you pick one up.

spec changes are remarkably unimpressive

Same can be said of the Boxster Spyder but when you drive one it is a totally different driving experience.

True. This car will make you want to trade in whatever you are currently driving no matter how impractical it is. I had Boxster S in my shop about 4-5 months ago and got out of it seriously considering trading in my current ride. Its THAT GOOD.

Sorry Guys but I will take the Blue "1949-51" 356 Cabriolet! This car gets me going! You can drive a fast car slow or drive a slow car fast! I'll take the slow one!

Porsche's problem is one of "hirorchy". They can't make the "R" too radical for fear it will eclipse their precious 911. They should not have called it an "R". More appropriate would have been Cayman Clubsport.Previous Clubsport models used the same engine and stripped out the interior. That's essentially what Porsche has done here. The 911 R went a lot further on this and had a lot more powerful engine. If they had put the 408HP GTS engine in it then "R" would have made sense!Porsche is so afraid of a lower rung model outperforming the 911 that they are frozen.Dumb in my opinion.
