Motor Trend Forced To Defend Credibility Of Picking Chevrolet's Volt As Car Of The Year
You said, “Folks, of all the cars, no offense, General Motors, please, but of all the cars in the world, the Chevrolet Volt is the Car of the Year? Motor Trend magazine, that’s the end of them. How in the world do they have any credibility? Not one has been sold. The Volt is the Car of the Year.”

So, Mr. Limbaugh; you didn’t enjoy your drive of our 2011 Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt? Assuming you’ve been anywhere near the biggest automotive technological breakthrough since … I don’t know, maybe the self-starter, could you even find your way to the front seat? Or are you happy attacking a car that you’ve never even seen in person?

You can drive 25-50 miles without using any gas in a Prius?

lol you mean like this $10,000-$11,000 kit that can only charge itself from wall outlet power and actually lowers the overall fuel economy of the prius when it isn't charged?

http://blogs.edmunds.com/greencaradvisor/2009/01/consumer-reports-prius-plug-in-kit-gets-nowhere-near-makers-100-mpg-claim.html

Simple, it would allow shorter gears which would allow the vehicle to accelerate easier and potentially allow for a smaller, more efficient electric motor.

When Toyota finally makes the plug in unit the prius will be able to drive 12 miles on a charge. Most articles complain about the Prius/Leaf versus Volt price. They totally forget thet the cheaper Prius/Leaf are stripped down versions.A fully loaded Prius will cost more than a volt. The volt comes loaded with an option for rear view camera and Leather.Heck even the floor mats are options on Toyotas.Being cheap cost them too much with the Floor mat recall.

Looks like some liberals tree huggers are making the decisions at MT

No, it looks like a magazine publisher & a automotive manufacturer that understands business & self-promotion are working together to increase sales for both parties!

Motor Trend tells GM that we'll give you COTY if you give us an exclusive:
- Motor Trend sales more issues for the month/quarter/etc.
- GM gets early buzz about a car that is not available
- MT gets mentioned in all of the ads that GM will air
- People who see tv ad, additional people buy MT magazine
- GM forecasts increased sales, increase advertising in magazine

This COTY IS a business deal!

I think they were biased towards the marketing program.

Hybrid car of the year is the Leaf.
Regular car of the year is new Sonata.

The Leaf isn't a hybrid, its an EV that goes 100 miles (maybe) and then thats it. The Sonata is a good car, but its significance towards the re-invention of the auto industry powertrain, I would say, pales in comparison to what the Volt is capable of.

Look up the Prius models on Toyota.com to see the price.Pick all the options on their Prius V and it is north of $35000.There is no wheel option or Onstar.I doubt if there is satelite radio and it looks SAD compared to a Volt. The prius is for cheapskates. If price is such a big factor no one will be buying Teslas.

The fact that you use satellite radio, a wheel option and onstar as the only market differentiators only validates people's thoughts that there is no major or significant difference between the Volt & the Prius. If there is no significant difference, then the Volt should not be named COTY.

I think the Hyundai Sonata should be named Car of the Year... it has given the perception of Hyundai a similar effect that the Fusion did last year...

So let me get this straight. Motor Trend's responding to Rush Limbaugh's ranting is somehow to be construed as it being "forced" to defend its credibility? You've got to be kidding me here. Rush Limbaugh?!? Oh pulease... He's no expert on automobiles nor is he a credible critic. The only shame here is that Motor Trend is even mentioning that Limbaugh opened his asshole once again.

Flat out there is no car in production that can do what the Volt is capable of doing. Some say the leaf should have won but the leaf will leave you stranded on the road when the batteries are dead. A plug in Prius is reported to get 12 to 14 miles before gas kicks in not even half way to the Volts 40 besides the plug in prius is not due out for a year maybe two. To many biAZZed people on this site.

It's clearly the Volt rightfully won. Currently there is not a car being made that can go 40 miles on pure electric plus over another 300 miles before charging/refueling. The Volt gets my vote hands down.

Agree 100%. I don't understand how it's even a question, it's the only car on the market currently that does what it does. The other electric cars out there (hello, Leaf) have range restrictions that make them useless to anyone other than an urban commuter. The Volt makes just as much sense for those buyers, but can ALSO be used just like a regular car for everyone else.

The Volt is the complete antithesis of the type of car I'd want to drive personally, and despite that even I would have voted for it. It's a breakthrough car, and that's what Car of the Year should be.

If your Prius gets 50 mpg and gas is $3.00 a gallon your cost to drive 15,000 miles is $800.00 a year. Drive a car that gets 30 mpg, drive 15,000 a year, at $3.00 a gallon your cost is $1,330 per year. For $530.00 a year. Please, for $530 a year I will drive a car that sounds like a car, gives me decent performance, good visibility and more.

You should say every political party that has been in office, because both parties have given billions of dollars to the automotive industry. You should not forget that it was the Republican party that attacked California over its air quality regulations.

Although I have to tip my hat off to GM and Chevy for the Volt, this is NOT fair. The Volt should be a contender next year. This year should've went to the Hyundai Sonata (imo)...
