Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN: Is The 2011 Jeep Wrangler Interior A Step In The RIGHT Direction?

Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN: Is The 2011 Jeep Wrangler Interior A Step In The RIGHT Direction?
For 2011, Chrysler Group is essentially overhauling as much as possible. New interiors, new exteriors, you name it, the works. And most of their cars needed it, badly.

Case in point: the Sebring, now dubbed the "200."

Aside from that, another car that needed a bit of sprucing up was the Jeep Wrangler. Having driven a 2010 model, I agree to a certain extent. There was hard plastics everywhere and the doors were exposed metal with some plastic bits here and there. A part of me found it wretched but another part of me embraced it because it was a utilitarian dream. That's because I can't think of another car I wouldn't mind beating the hell out of and climbing back into it with muddy boots without thinking twice. To 00R that's what the Wrangler is all about.

But as you can see down below, the 2011 Wrangler has benefited from an update and it gets some interior updates. Although you would hardly consider it luxurious, it is a HUGE step up from Wranglers of yore.

With all of that said, are you pleased to see the 2011 Wrangler get a nicer look or would you prefer the more proletariat version?

The top of the line Wranglers (Like the Sahara) have always had nicer appointments than the middle of the line up. Which model is the picture depicting or are they all like that with full carpeting and navigation?

That's not the point.

Go to Jeep.com and look at interior photos of the 2010 Wrangler then compare them to the 2011.

Note the upgraded dash, steering wheel and door panels.

OK, I did that. The new interior is nicer but not necessarily less rugged. The old interior still has full carpeting, speakers everywhere, little niches and slots that will catch and hold dirt and is largely incapable of being hosed out like the older (CJ 5 & 7) Jeeps. I think we're seeing the difference between cheap plastics and better plastics and, to me, that's a good thing. The pic you show above is for a top-of-the-line model while the lower trim levels (shown on the Jeep.com site as well) have less equipment and fluff and are more likely to be used in the traditional way. The top of the line models have always appealed to the folks who never dream of going off road in any serious way (remember the Renegade?) while the Rubicon, a purposeful off road machine, and the lesser models have been for the serious Jeepers. If you've wanted rugged in a Jeep, for a quite some time now, you've had to remove the carpeting and take off the doors. That can still be done.

Allegedly, the interior is still washable while adding comfort and convienience features like softer materials, garmin navigation, heated seats and mirrors, auto climate control, express windows, 115 volt outlet and steering wheel controls. With that said (even if Im wrong about it still being able to be hosed out), thumbs up to Jeep.

Nice improvements, glad to hear it still can be clean out with hose. Just wait Consumer Reports will still bitch that is doesn't handle like a Civic, that why CR sucks.

CR is very inaccurate, You are right they will bash it for not being a sports car.

Is this interior actually water proof enough to take a hose to? That GPS looks like it may not like water much, and in Canada it can get very cold, that LCD Screen would freeze in the winter, my brothers hand held Garmin froze on him while hiking, although great for warm climates.
