Say What? Maserati SUV To Be Built In Michigan?

Say What? Maserati SUV To Be Built In Michigan?
That nightmarish future we told you about, the one where Chrysler and Maserati get back in bed together for a Jeep Grand Cherokee-based Alfa / Maserati SUV? Yeah, you've got until 2013 until that one pans out.

According this time to the Wall Street Journal, celebrity-CEO Sergio Marchionne was quoted at the L.A. Auto Show repeating his faith and pride in the JGC platform, "This is just a great architecture, why wouldn't I put a Maserati on it?" That's solid logic right there. (Other examples of the same thinking: "This is just a great McRib, why wouldn't I put truffles on it?" "This is just a great Timex, why wouldn't I put diamonds on it?" ...I could go all day here.)

People said this when Porsche announced an SUV. Doing pretty well for them now

Good God, I feel sorry for Maserati already.

I'm not getting all the negativity here. The Grand Cherokee platform is derived from the original Mercedes platform and both have been lauded pretty openly by the press. It's not like Fiat is going to have them build Grand Cherokees with Maserati badges instead of Jeep badges. The vehicle will have its own identity and styling. If they have a good platform and Fiat has decided to build a Maserati SUV, why not use the good one they have? If it competes well with Porsche, BMW and the upcoming Lamborghini SUVs...why not? Guys...this is not Lee Iacocca's Chrysler we're talking about.

What Im not getting is why everyone keeps calling the platform under the new Grand Cherokee a "Mercedes platform" or why everyone thinks its from the previous generation ML...

Why not? there exists a large supplier base in Michigan many idled plants and it's right smack in the middle of Chrysler's shipping hub. Makes perfect sense to build it in Michigan.

At least it is being built on a good chassis. Bolt on some AMG parts and it will be one hot SUV
