Toyota Decides To Add Turbocharging And Direct Injection Into Line Up
Toyota Motor Corp. plans to introduce 11 new or redesigned hybrid vehicles by 2012, but the carmaker is hardly neglecting the humble internal combustion engine.

Takeshi Uchiyamada, executive vice president in charge of r&d, also wants to increase the fleet's fuel efficiency by putting turbochargers and direct fuel injection in smaller vehicles. "In the next five years, the general trend is downsizing of engines and the use of turbochargers," Uchiyamada said in an interview. "Another development will be direct fuel injection."

it was re introduced after Hyundai started doing it. They used to offer the TRD solara back in 2000 with the turbo charger I remember clearly they had a red and a white TRD solara on the lot when I bought mine. they were $34,000 sticker price but it was a dealer add on it didnt come from the factory like that

DI? When?
I don't know Toyota has any DI engine. Do you?

Yeah in Europe and Japan for at least a decade on Toyota products, check TTAC for a listing on this same topic. In US on Lexus (IS, GS, LS) since 2007ish. As an across the board engine technology, it has still been rather expensive for the incremental performance and FE gains. I guess cost is likely coming down significantly now, if even Hyundai can affordably use it. Point is, this is being heralded as Toyota finally embracing, in fact lagging the industry on this, which is just not true. It is merely Toyota stating that they will be increasing movement in this, as all mfrs are, and not really news.

Good news, Although Toyota is still behind Ford, Hyundai and Chevy with the direct injection.
