GM may re-enter World Rally Championship to appeal to younger consumers
To boost the image and selling prices of European brands Vauxhall and Opel, General Motors Co. mulls entering the World Rally Championship for the first time in over 20 years. Nick Reilly, president of GM's European operations, says success in motor sport would drive the appeal of GM's models to younger buyers after its image was hurt by a $50 billion government bailout. Reilly adds that, while winning many awards, Opel and Vauxhall probably don't command the prices they deserve.

"...after its image was hurt by a $50 billion government bailout." -- Ya wanna fix that image?

1) Learn how to be consistently profitable without bailouts.
2) Make products that people desire, and do this in a cost-effective manner. This, BTW, takes care of item 1.
3) Take care of your customers well enough so they actually *want* to buy another GM car after they've owned one for a while.
4) And if you paid back all that bailout money (including the government's purchase of millions of GM shares at way above market value), with interest as an added measure of goodwill, this would go a LOT farther than auto racing to restore your sullied reputation.

Do you feel the same way about the large banks that got 14x more many than GM and saved about 14x times less jobs and said banks are still not lending our tax dollars to people that need it?

uaw_lax: I feel...
1) The Government does NOT owe it's citizens a job. So it's not The Government's responsibility to "save" jobs, or to "create" jobs. It sure helps if The Government creates an ecosystem in which the *competent* can thrive.
2) Enterprises that are mismanaged and head for the halls of bankruptcy bear a loud message for us: We are crappy businesspeople, and we lose money. Either that, or it's just a sign of the times and they have become irrelevant (e.g., buggy whip manufacturers when automobiles replaced horse-drawn carts)
