41% Of Buyers Believe Buying An American Vehicle Is Important...But WHAT Is American?
Each of us has a slightly different set of criteria when we go shopping for a new ride. Some are obsessed with horsepower, some want airbags, and some marketing folks believe that cupholders are still the key to many buyers' hearts. But for 41% of Americans, the most important criteria is simply, "Was it made in the U.S.?"

What people say they believe is a lot less important than what they actually do. FWIW, 22% of Americans believe in ghosts, but who knows if that actually influences their decision at time of purchase.

My criteria for my next car includes having to have a stick that lets ME shift my own gears. Right off the bat a lot of cars drop off my list.

If American workers are paid to assemble the cars and manufacture most of the parts. And, if those workers pay American taxes, and the car company pays American taxes - that's about as good as it gets. American companies that manufacture their cars in Canada/Mexico/or? - pay foreign workers and foreign taxes - are no better than foreign car companies that pay foreign workers and foreign taxes. It's not rocket science.

I buy American because countries like Japan do not allow competition from countries like USA korea etc.We should ban Japanese made cars since they do not have an even playing field. They go as far as to make it more expensive to register cars with over 40,000 kilometers so people buy newer ones and the factories keep rolling. Our Government can barely do anything good for our auto industry before the conservatives get involved. We are killing our own economy by buying imports. When will Americans wake up.All three of my cars are American and I am a foreigner.

Because American cars are put together badly and are prone to recalls. By the way, each country has to protect their own. Do whatever works to keep the country's finances going. To put it simply "Watch your own back"

What is American and whats not can be decided by where the profits go it's that simple. You can try to murky the water by saying where its built at but that's BS when globalization comes to play. We all know Apple is an American company but its products are built in China and yes the CEO Steve Jobs is not Chinese.

Thats your decision and your right. The same rights GI's died for in American made planes and Tanks made in Chrysler and GM plants years ago.

The tricky thing is, if you buy a Japanese nameplate you are more likely to be purchasing an American built vehicle than if you bought a Ford, Chrysler, or GM, since so many of their vehicles are built in Canada and Mexico. I actually prefer Amercian nameplates over Asian and European, primarily because of character. Thre is really no evidence to support that Japanese cars are better built than American ones anymore. The paragons of virtue Toyota and Honda have lost their way and once ridculed Fix-Or-Repair-Daily (FORD, to the linguistically embarassed) is making a killing building very good metal. I say buy what you like, and then enjoy the consequences, whether they may be high depreciation or high repair bills.

When I drove my BMW Z4 built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, I used to get hassled by my UAW buddies many of whom were driving "domestics" which were built in Mexico or Korea. Go figure.
