Tennesse Senator Tells Volkswagen That Unionization Would Be An Unhealthy Option
U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., says he has told Volkswagen officials that he thinks it would be "highly detrimental" to the German manufacturer if the United Auto Workers organizes its Chattanooga assembly plant.

"I was asked to give input, and I did," Corker said.

The advice stemmed from his experience trying to negotiate with the union during the 2008 federal bailout of GM and Chrysler, he said.

"I certainly shared with [VW] I couldn't see how there was any possibility it could be a benefit to them to enter into a contract with UAW," said Corker, a former Chattanooga mayor.

Senator Bob Corker: "the UAW "breeds an 'us versus they' relationship, and I just don't think it's healthy for a company to be set up in that regard."

Bob King, UAW president says: There is a difference between "this 20th century perception of UAW" and "the 21st century reality where we're proactive on all these issues of quality and productivity."

Just look to the American auto industry, and compare them to the world stage to determine who you believe. It appears to me that if unions themselves are not parasitic, self-serving, extortionistic organizations, then perhaps it's just the UAW that personifies these shameful characteristics.

I think that was in the GM/Chrysler contracts.

Let me look: Page 1052, paragraph 6, section 4a....

"Provision of recreation area for cooperative consumption of recreational drugs and alcoholic beverages."

Yep it was in there...

Good point on those UAW requirement, but don't forget the UAW kronies promise that "quality" is job one. Reminds me of the time I bought a GM car in 1978 (my last UAW built car) and there were lunch bags inside the door panel on both sides (when the dealer removed the panels due to the smell). Maybe those UAW pot heads will ask for a specific place to store their brown bag lunches as part of the new VW agreement.

The union movement died in the '80s after Reagan successfully busted the Air Traffic controllers union.

Unions like UAW no longer exist as a force in the U.S. We are now a purely market driven economy where keeping wages depressed and corporate profits inflated are the order of the day.

And I certainly hope they get rid of those Unions in Germany too! Look at those crappy products built by Unions... Porsche, BMW, MB, Audi, VW etc... And get rid of them in Japan too... freaking hunk of junk Lexus, Infinity... I would never drive anything made by a Union member. Only made in China (or at least at China wages) for me!!!

valhallakey - touche. Personally, I don't much care for UAW in the States but I agree with you valhallakey, we should not paint "labour union" with such a broad brush and should not equate UAW with labour union as a whole. Working in Asia, labour union actually represents a more traditional/historical role of life protection and treating workers with human dignity.

You anti union slugs are a joke. You work from cradle to grave for a little money and no benefits. Union guys retire early with a good pension and a full benefit package. Studies have been taken which prove most people, if given the opportunity, would join a union. Let's face it only a LOSER would work for a little money and no benefits.

You prove the point so well. Do nothing, demand everything and get a good pension and other benefits. Everyone else is stupid. Perhaps, but at least we earn what we work for.
