AWESOME or AWFUL: Porsche Fesses Up About The Cajun

AWESOME or AWFUL: Porsche Fesses Up About The Cajun
Well, the purists who said the Cayenne and Panamera were diluting the brand are not going to like this. Porsche has come out and is finally admitting to working on a project dubbed the Cajun.

Although I used to be one of those harsh types that bashed a brand for losing focus, I've realized -- with help of the Porsche Panamera and BMW X6 -- that these cars serve a purpose. With some predictions hinting at a Q5-based sport-utility vehicle, Porsche remains tight-lipped about specifics.

Taking this all into consideration, is this a good/bad move for Porsche? Remember, the Cayenne and Panamera have sold extremely well...

Porsche's press release follows:

Stuttgart. November 29, 2010-- During its meeting today, the Supervisory Board of Porsche AG, Stuttgart, laid the foundations for continuous and successful growth of the company. The Supervisory Board instructed the Board of Management to drive forward the development of a further model series up to series production.

Under the working name "Cajun", this efficient and sporty model will further expand the world’s most successful Porsche segment in the SUV sector. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the "Cajun" will also have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility. As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the "Cajun" will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the current Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars.

Brand dilution is less visible now since the water is already murky.

Awful- Younger buyers already aspire to Porsche, they just can't afford it. If Porsche wants to sell more cars they should lower the prices of the options. I can afford to buy a Porsche, I just can't afford to get it the way that I want it. A small SUV probably will not do the trick. I could kinda see the Porsche version of the Bluesport maybe with a turbo 4 called the 914. I'd even be open to a 5 series sized sedan with a price to match.

@Tauron

Although thats a brilliant idea, the problem is that those cars just don't move in large enough volumes to justify it.

Take a look at Cayman sales and you'll quickly see what I am talking about.

@00R...a 914 revival or a mid sized luxury sports car wouldn't sell more than a small SUV? WIth Porsche pricing that would definitely encroach on Cayenne sales.

Porsche has to have a wider lineup and more affordble models in order to pay the bills. Its impossible for a company to survive on $80,000 - $130,000 cars alone. They need volume sellers and the Boxster/Cayman is a start but it isn't enough.

A premium brand is designed to supply for the masses... the reason why vehicles have prestige is because not every Joe Schmo can get one...

I just hope they don't make a riced up Tiguan...

What Porche is doing by expanding into new categories is working so far... both for Porche and their customers. The brand couldn't remain a one or two trick pony and survive, so they are giving consumers what they want without selling their soul in the process. Drive one and you'll understand.
