2013 Lexus IS To Be Based On FT-86 Platform?
Although it’s nearly a half decade away, we are hearing reports that the next-generation IS sedan will make its debut sometime in 2013.
The reason, according to our sources, is that work has started on a new 4-door sedan based on the FT-86 platform. For those who are not familiar with the
FT-86
, it’s the concept car that made news at last year’s
Tokyo Motor Show
.
As the spiritual successor to the old Levin AE-86, a car we called the
Corolla
coupe, the rear-wheel-drive FT-86 will make its debut in June 2012.

That rendering sucks, but I like the idea they keep it from growing big or heavy. My concern is those flat 4 and 6 engines are not very impressive, and I thought everyone is going FI? I predict they'll be using FI 2.5 H4.....

Wow on I know it easier to make the car goes fast, more powerful and improve it handling. But design a car that already look so good will be a problem. Lexus will have a problem trying to make the next Lexus IS350 as handsome as the current model just like Infiniti did with the original G35 coupe.

I don't think it will look anything like that... by then Lexus will have a new design language... I can't imagine them having an 9 year design language...

Toyota has one of the slowest design houses in all the automotive industry.
The IS/Altezza never changed for Years. The last few generations of the LS all look the same from 89-97 and then again from 00-09. The RX Second and Third Gen look nearly identical...and that is around a 9 year cycle. And the SC 300/400 was a 9 year cycle from 91-2000 followed up by the SC430 which was again a 9 year cycle.
Honestly if I didn't know Toyota had its own design house, I would have said they outsourced their design work to Porsche.

rendering looks awful...very dated. very little character to it.
is the new IS that far off? we're already in the 6th year of the current model without any noticeable refresh, no new engines, no new transmissions, no new technologies. WTF?
