Audi Decides To Skip Ahead And Focus On Becoming The EV Leader Of Luxury Brands

Audi has big plans for its electric vehicle business.

"By 2020, we want to be the leading premium seller of electric vehicles," Franciscus van Meel, Audi's manager for electric mobility strategy, said at a recent technical workshop at the company's headquarters in Ingolstadt, Germany.

"We will successively bring out a variety of hybrid models and electric vehicles, such as our first plug-in hybrid in 2014," he said, without sharing more details on the plug-in hybrid.

Smart business move to try to get ahead of the competition. This would also explain why Audi has been showing performance car concepts as of late. Performance models for the hardcore and Audi loyalists, electrics & hybrids for the rest of the Audi customers, potential & actual.

Hahahah. They are to late to the game. A lot of manufactures have a huge head start on VW.

Personally, I don't think Audi/VW being late or early to the game is important as the fact that there are more players joining the game; specifically, the game of providing more choices (petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric, ethanol, fuel cells, etc.) for us consumers. And on that note 009, a pleasant good night

Interesting that they've decided to direct such an engineering effort and financial commitment to this technology. They must see something to it that perhaps the rest of us haven't had vision to yet? I know as recently as 3yrs ago they hired 50 PHDs in electrical engineering and probably have put on more since then. Given the number of patents this company has, I wouldn't be surprised if they've applied for a few more recently. Maybe were about to witness some new emerging technology?
