Feds To Mandate Rearview Cameras In All Vehicles
Rearview cameras could become more common in future cars and trucks under new rules the government was proposing today to address concerns about drivers unintentionally backing over children.
The Transportation Department was offering new requirements to improve rear visibility in cars by the 2014 model year. Most carmakers would meet the requirements by installing rear-mounted video cameras and in-vehicle displays.

I'm kind of bothered by this. It's the whole "think of the children" defense which is going to cause prices to increase and possibly shortages when all the companies are trying to procure LCD displays. Why could they not have gone with backup sensors instead? This just seems like a waste of additional money.

why don't they mandate a middle finger sign that pops up when the person behind you decides to tailgate? surely that'll reduce accidents.

Man our GOV'T are made up of a bunch of fools. A rear view camera will only prevent children getting run over if the driver looks at the screen. Object detection would work much better.

If driver visibility is concerned, why are windows getting higher and smaller each model year?
