Marchionne’s biggest dilemma is to sell or not Alfa Romeo to Vw, report says

Last September, Volkswagen's boss Ferdinand Piech implied that it may take over Alfa Romeo but he declined to provide details. What Piech had emphasized is that VW has the ability to turn around Alfa Romeo and make it a profitable company. Fiat’s head, Sergio Marchionne, was quick to deny that there were talks.

Well it would force Fiat,as you say, to really use Chrysler platforms to sell in Europe and beyond. Fiat on it's own has been unsuccessful in selling anything larger then B class vehicles. Their premium platform they inherited from GM and were going to share with Saab was a bust. It was too heavy and too expensive and not RWD. They now have this opportunity with Chrysler. However in order for them to sell larger cars they would have use Lancia for this purpose if they no longer have Alfa. The problem is unlike Alfa Lancia's have never sold well outside of Italy. With the Giulietta (C-Evo)platform Alfa has recently been the bright star in the dismal sales performance this yr with Fiat. You have to wonder if Giving Alfa up now instead of further expanding it with Chrysler and shared C-Evo large platforms will really help Fiat stop it's sales slide.Fiat is kind of stuck like VW in the sense that it is marketed and branded as the "peoples" car as in small and inexpensive. The public will not really buy into a "large" Fiat. Lancia has a depp history of fine automobiles but that was over 40 yrs ago. Their last success was the rally bred Integrale of the early and mid 90's. Up until this yr the Fiat derived small Epsilon was really helping Lancia sales. Now it seems that the Giulietta has been doing this. All I can say is that marchionne does have a big dilemma to deal with.Which is the greater gamble. Improving Alfa or taking some up front money and trying to revitalize Lancia.
