Lexus still has the lead in the luxury car segment, despite Bmw’s impressive sales
Despite BMW AG topping November sales for the luxury car segment in the US, Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus is still predicted to keep its title as the best-selling premium brand for the 11th consecutive year.

In a statement last Wednesday, BMW revealed that its US sales for November increased by 30% to 20,097 when compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, Mercedes posted an 8.4% increase to 18,208, while Lexus's deliveries dropped 1.4% to 18,240.

What's the point?...when german luxury brands have been in the game 100 plus years and they still can't seem to de-thrown a susposed re-badge brand in north america that have only been around for only 20 years globally. I guess it was not as easy as euro brands thought it would be. As for GM/Buick...$80 plus billion bailout in tax payer's money, brings you buick is opel or opel is buick, but Buick takes the full credit?!? Not Opel(A German brand right?),so what's new in GM's cannibal world of cars? Now that's your ad!...Pick your poison and enjoy!...lmfao!!!

Drive a Lexus, and you'll never want to drive a Toyota again, as great an average Toyota can be for its price.

I presonaly admire Toyota's decision to build a luxury brand from scratch. Unlike other corporations who find it proper to simply buy a brand with "history" and "prestige".

What has Ettore Bugatti to do with Bugatti Veyron for example?

The only thing Toyota "scratched" was removing the Toyota name from the Camry. The ES250 was pure Toyota. Only during recalls does "Lexus" hide behind big Toyota. L.A. Times had a article and refered to Toyota ES350.

uh huh. How many Lexus's does Toyota sell annually worldwide again? And what place are they in compared to BMW, Mercedes, and Audi? Oh yeah, last place. By a staggeringly enormous margin. Enjoy your Lexus-flavored Kool-Aid.

"BMW, Benz & Audi have a combined 289 years on the market...Lexus has 21, and more than half that has been spent at #1 in the largest luxury car buying market in the world. Pretty impressive if you ask me."

I nominate this post as the "DUMBEST AUTOSPIES POST OF 2010". Well done, moron.

Hey genius, BMW and MB sell MORE EXPENSIVE cars than Lexus first of all. No shit that Lexus will sell more. Besides, over 80% of Lexus sales in the US stem from the ES and RX. Wow, what an achievement. Two Toyota-based entry-level luxury cars making up 80% of Lexus sales in the US - I am so amazed!

Second, the car market in the US back in the say 1920s or 1950s was a whole different game than it is now. Mercedes and BMW weren't big here until the late 1960s and 1970s when their sales really began to take off. Back then the baby boomers were young adults who didn't care too much about luxury. Beginning in the 1980s and 1990s those baby boomers were aging and looking for comfortable, cushy cars and that's when the luxury market, especially imported luxury cars, really started taking off. I'd argue that luxury cars are more common nowadays than they were back in the 1980s and before that time!

Third, Lexus global sales are a joke. I find it amusing how Lexus always talks about their "global sales" when anyone with a half a brain can interpret this as "3/4 of our sales from the US and 1/4 of our dismal sales scattered across the planet".

Fourth, in other markets, prestige brands are defined by their history, heritage, traditions, motorsport, innovation, global appeal etc. Audi's got it, BMWs got it and Mercedes' has definitely got it. Lexus? None of these things apply to Lexus. Their history as starting out as badge engineered Toyotas is a joke compared to their history of their European rivals. Innovation? Lexus has little innovation compared to their European rivals. Global appeal or classic cars? Lexus? None. I could go on, but you get the idea. In markets where a luxury brand is measured by its history, Lexus has no chance.

blackdynamite: if you actually READ THE ARTICLE, you'd know that BMW and lexus both pay $3100 in incentives per car on average. considering that comparable BMWs are more expensive than lexus, that would mean....

lexus pay proportionately LARGER incentives than BMW.

the funny part is that everyone boosts blackdynamite's post--even though it's completely wrong. bmw and lexus BOTH pay $3100 average incentives. lol

black:

you can't do math to save your life. lol.

let's assume your are correct and that BMW has paid $1-2k MORE in incentives. the final SALES PRICES of BMWs are still notably higher than lexus. just go build the comparable models with the SAME EQUIPMENT. the BMW will always be 20-30% more (and don't talk base prices since lexus loads up the cars with standard equipment).

lexus builds discounts into the MSRP.

so silly boy. the germans just build superior cars. and people will happily pay more for better products. drive an IS and then drive a 335i....it's obvious to the automotive world which is better. then do the same with the ISF/M3, GS/5-series, LS/7-series. same result.

if you like driving, buy a bmw. if you like sitting on a sofa, buy a lexus.

there's a reason the average lexus buyer is nearly 60.

How I see is if you want a performance kinda vehicle then you have plenty of choices in the luxury categories (BMW, Audi) but if you want something with a softer more smoother kinda feel you are closed down to Lexus and Buick. Now this may just be my opinion but saying "I have a Buick" isn't the same as saying "I have a Lexus" :)

Ah Lexus...if Toyotas are the appliances of the automotive world, Lexus is the Maytag Neptune. Overpriced and dull, they are point A to B cars with soft suspension for people with sensitive hemorrhoids. But they're reliable...just means you'll have to put up with it longer.

I own a 1st generation 1991 Lexus LS400 with 192,000 miles, and it was the first and the last exquisite Lexus, built to compete with the best the world could throw at it. As mentioned earlier, Lexus is no better than any other re-badging American automaker.

*Stepping down from soap box*

Although I do prefer the 3 German makes more than Lexus, I must say I think the BMW aficionados are the most thin skinned bunch on this website. Anything that question their dominance in any aspect (performance, handling, styling, sales figure, etc.) are dutifully attacked. It's bad enough when the counterpart is Audi or MB but it's the worse when it's Lexus. Having said that, I do enjoy reading these outbursts from BMW and Lexus fans.

All brands are designed differently, and every car performs the way it's designed to. Some are sporty but ride harder. Some are softer and don't handle as well. When I was younger and sold Porsche all I did was ride around around as fast as I could. As I got older and slowed down my tastes changed to more luxury and a better ride. I still like a powerful well engineered car, but the german cars I've owned in the past had problems with their electronics.....
