VIDEO: The 2012 Volkswagen "Oprah" Beetle Caught On Camera

VIDEO: The 2012 Volkswagen
You've seen the pictures and we reported it's biggest news item yet: Oprah is giving away a ton to her audience members.

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle is definitely making its share of headlines and getting attention, but 00R isn't sure if it's anything to get genuinely psyched up about unless you're a bug fiend. As far as he can tell, it's a Beetle that's had its roofline chopped and most likely has a revamped interior.

Hopefully VW intends on varying up the powerplant options to make this a more competitive offering in the market. Imagine a hybrid bug that could get a Prius-like 50 MPG? That might actually be pretty cool.

Anyway, onto the video...

There is something very Porsche-like to this car's stance and styling--and I don't just mean the lights. Look at the width and lower height, the fenders, roofline (including the more upright A-pillar) and design ratios. If this is meant to add perceived value and make it a car more men will consider buying, then VW may have gotten it right. But... 1.) if it's debuting on Oprah, maybe it's still going to target women primarily and 2.) if VW isn't addressing quality issues, even great performance and handling won't matter.

I'm not sure of the lower height. I'm wondering if it just looks lower because it is longer. I agree though it does have the stance of the old 356. I hope it is lower though.
