Infiniti Considers Dropping New Performance IPL Moniker For

Infiniti's hot models could carry Powered by AMG badges as part of Nissan’s recent tie-up with the Daimler group, sources in Japan have suggested.

Nissan’s luxury arm is considering all options for the Infiniti Performance Line, from mere styling add-ons to full-blown hot models built on the main production line. But the latter option is said to be more in tune with the brand’s stated ambition to be recognised for its dynamics and performance.

I think it cool that MB and Nissan are partnering up for business but "PLEASE" Do Not use the AMG because it seem tacky and cheap on a Nissan. It almost like, oh I can't afford a MB, I buy a Nissan and put on the AMG badge.

I think Nissan should've NOT partner up with MB in the first place because their engine is fine and has won numerous award for it VQ engine. If anything they should only share diesel and hybrid technology.

I think this will destroy Nissan's image. Nissan has great engines, more powerful and reliable than the MB's. If they put MB engines in the upcoming G37, I'm definitly not trading my current G35 with a new one. Keep your great engines Nissan, don't ruin what you have!!

Since when are Mercedes engines weak or unreliable?

I really disagree. I've had 3 Mercedes-Benzes in the past (and one now), powered by the 1.8L supercharged I4, the 4.3L V8, the 3.5L V6 and now the 5.5L V8 and I've never ever ever had any major engine faults. Come back when you have some facts buddy.

This move would seemingly dilute and be detrimental to the AMG brand.

If I was MB, I'd be pretty upset to have spent years and lots of $$$$ building up the AMG name only to have it slapped on a Nissan.

What's next, the Chrysler 300 Alpina?

Noooooooooooo, I so do not want this to happen. For all its worth, I love the uniqueness of Ifiniti and Nissan, because its speaks directly through their culture. I will seriously pray that this not happen. I'm so serious. I think Mercedes is trying to destroy companies that they become partnered with. Like Chrysler for one example. Daimler is a leach and just needs a sugar daddy.

there is no way that mercedes is strategically stupid enough to undermine the AMG brand by licensing it to other manufacturers.

never gonna happen.

I know as a car enthusiast it shouldn't happen, but the little kid in me thinks it would be cool. I don't know why every one is stressing it. It would be better if it said Tuned By AMG. It makes it sound more seperate. Its an Infinity motor, but it was tuned by AMG. Powered by AMG would mean an AMG motor is in the car.

If the next generation G37 coupe is getting an AMG I will NOT buy the next generation G and will get the next BMW 335i coupe instead. I bought my G37 coupe 5 months ago because I wanted an Infiniti, engine and it exhaust note, it unique and distintive. When a G35 or G37 coupe fly by, you're know it a Infiniti G35 or G37 coupe just by hearing it exhaust note. And if I wanted a MB, I will get a MB or BMW etc...! I just think it won't go well with the fans and following of the G35 and G37 owners.

I hope this does not happen. Nissan/Infiniti has great engines and think a Mercedes engine would tarnish Infiniti!!

What's this bullshit about MB engines being crap? They're great engines. Just because they're more tuned towards luxury than sport doesn't mean they'll tarnish the meaningless (in Europe) Infiniti nameplate to begin with. It's not like the VQ is anything special anymore given how Nissan has beaten it to death with constant engine capacity increases which have affected overall smoothness in case you have not noticed.

Nissan has all the resources they need in-house. They don't need to rely on AMG for this.

The suspected plan is to have a turbo charged MB's 3.5 V6 that produces around 400hps.... Hmmm, why not the idiot Nissan turbo charge it's current VQ37 and produce OVER 400hps?

To those that "think" German engines are better than Japanese, pop the hood of say a brand new E350 and G37. Compare quality, compare power, compare reliability records, talk to auctioneers and they'll tell you how many MB are sold with blown up enigines/transmissions. Don't just look at the expensive name. Look at the thought put into engineering things.

One thing that I just HATE about the German cars and sadly even the Japanese are doing that too. Is getting rid of engine/trani dip sticks. So just think of this scenario. You want to go on a trip and you want to check your oil level before you hit the road. You'll have to take a dealer appointment to check that for you and be charged.

I've owned different cars and concluded to never get any German car again. Just thought of another stupid feature. I had a 2001 S500 sport package, and for you to adjust the memory seats you'll have to have the door open and keep your damn finger pressed on the button. Now anyone that has that model (and probably later models too) comment here and say that's not the case either.

A note to Nissan. You have one of the best engines out there don't dump them for stinking MB engines!!

Man, cut the BS. The E350 has a very reliable engine and transmission combination. That's a fact. It's also silly to claim that the Japanese put more thought into their engine design etc. because the Germans, French, Americans etc. do the same damn thing. Your comments border on pure fanboyism.

WillisWillis - 12/7/2010 10:48:37 AM

Oh, and unlike Nissan, Mercedes hasn't increased the power output of its old 3.5-l V6 over the years. Nissan has increased the power output of the VQ engine through engine cc increases which have affected overall smoothness. While the E350 motor might be weaker, most accounts claim it's smoother than the current 3.7 VQ.

None." the Point was nissan has the technology to turbo charge and upgrade any of their past engines no matter what liter size. They have proven they can produce and class leading vehicles.

This articles is about technology right?
