Porsche To Lead Sportscar Direction For VW Group - Is Audi Going To Take This Sitting Down?
After months of uncertainty, Porsche has been told by Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn that it will take the lead in developing sports cars and big luxury sedans for VW group. That was a blow to Audi, whose executives and engineers had strongly lobbied for those roles.

Winterkorn's announcement, which came just before Porsche's annual meeting on Nov. 30, will allay fears at Porsche that the Stuttgart-based carmaker would be sidelined as it becomes VW group's 10th brand.

What do you expect?

Panamera waaaay hotter than A8.

Audi maybe a Premium Luxury Brand but in this category Porsche owns it hands down.....

I think as a sports car/super car maker they have the pedigree and for the luxury part they do have great build quality. However, just because they are amongst the best in the world for finished product it doesn't mean they have the know-how to lead the Audi brand to success.

So my response is the sports car aspect yes leave it for Porsche and the luxury leave it to Audi or parent VW.

I don't care who owns who. Ferrari don't even known themselves. But the end result is what matters. Decision makers make the choices that will either make the companies fail or succeed.

I hope they make the right choices for the long term and not just out of respect because Porsche is still a very big company itself and also has ties to the VW family by blood.

Audi has no choice. Porsche, for all intents and purposes, is to be part of VAG. It may take longer then planned but it will eventually happen. It seems to make sense that VAG would not want to dilute the Porsche brand much further. If they let Audi take the lead on engineering it most probably seriously damage Porsche's reputation for engineering sports cars. Further Porsche has now produced RWD platforms in both front, mid, and rear engine application as well as AWD.I'm not in any sense belittling Audi. They too can do mid engine and front engined fwd and awd. They have yet to make a production front engined rwd vehicle. The Panamera platform version #2 will most likely be then a multiuse platform for lambo,Bentley and Porsche with Audi continuing to produce it's main vehicles in longitudinal FWD and AWD. As for the future of the R8 I'm guessing it will probably go more upscale and closer in price to Lambo with an only engined V10. The V8 I'm guessing will be put out to pasture. This would keep the R8 from direct competition with the 911 in the future. The R4 would perhaps use the 3.6 VAG 6 or inline 5,while the Boxster would use a Porsche flat 6 and flat 4 Turbo. It appears also that Porsche will develope a 2dr version of the Panamera and the Lambo Estoque 4dr sedan and replacement for the Bentley Continental GT. Audi can forge it's own way continuing what it has been doing. I know it is wishful thinking but I would love to see,at least the design,Quattro concept come to fruit in a lower cost volume production. I would not object if it replaced the TT.

The current situation, where Audi makes a contemporary performance car and Porsche continues to build a product that is "retro" makes no sense. I'm a major Porscheophile, but eventually, they have to make something that is not derrived from that 1938 Berlin-Rome car if they want to be relevant. Having Audi make exactly what Porsche should be building for younger buyers is suicidal behavior by VW, if they keep it up. It will kill Porsche's customer base.

Well put. However Porsche has tried more then once to get away from the rear 911 architecture and has ultimately failed(EG-928/944/968).As for styling you cannot really expect them to not use the classic Porsche headlamps and zero grill(well the front spoiler is a grill but beneath the bumper line). They could change the shape of the 911 and Cayman Boxster. (I've always been a fan of the Porsche 904 with it's kamm tail and long headlamps). However the higherups will not change until sales take a dramatic drop. To further complcate things the Cayenne and Panamera are Porsches best selling products right now. So until people tire of the 911 face and rear end it looks to be business as usual in the styling department.I'm sure that the R8 will be scaled back and only offer the Lamborghini V10 in the future. Further I believe the high output V8 will be used only for Bentley and the A8.

This is the right move.

Porsche has the sports car realm to itself within VAG. The R8 will just be a stepchild from now on until Porsche launches its own branded supercar in 5-8 years.

And Porsche has proven itself with the Panamera by showing that they can design a car that can compete head to head with BMW and MB - something that Audi has never demonstrated. Sure, the new Audi's are nice, but they aren't going to kick BMW and MB to the curb like the Panamera has done.

Results are results and the decision has to go to Porsche.

Stupid article...If you compare Audi to Porsche historically, which would you follow for Sportscar direction. Audi's only true sportscar is a Lamborghini!
