Is It Just Me, Or Are There Just A Lot Of Ugly Cars Out There?

Is It Just Me, Or Are There Just A Lot Of Ugly Cars Out There?

Remember when new cars were a source of pride? I sure do. I remember the days when a neighbor would drive home in a shiny new ride and all the neighborhood guys would gravitate towards the new rig and compliment the owner on his purchase.

Things are a little different today. Yeah, new cars still generate interest but now you’re more likely to hear things like, “Well, once you get past that front-end it’s actually a pretty decent lookin’ car.”

For some reason, more and more cars are hitting showrooms that I would classify as “unfortunately designed.”  At first it was just Acura and the occasional Subaru, but now the trend towards ugliness has infiltrated nearly all car segments.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.........

I asked my wife the same thing a few days ago thinking I was just being a critical "car guy" but she strongly agreed. It's like the only way to get something decent looking is to spend $40K or more. And even then there are still lotsa uglies in that group.

There always have been ugly cars and there always will be. Look at any decade and you will find a LOT of ugly cars.

I'll bite and add my personal list:

-Honda CrossTour
-Honda Accord
-Honda Civic
-Honda Fit
-Nissan Juke
-Nissan Rogue
-Nissan Sentra
-Toyota (all models)
-Acura (all except MDX)
-VW Jetta
-Mazda 6
-Chevy Aveo
...and my list can go on, but basically 90% of the cars out there do not hit my list. Again totally personal opinion.

And again, including the Mazda6 makes it a worthless opinion. It was almost valid until then.

In my opinion, the non-North American mazda 6 looks awesome. When they made the bigger NA version, they screwed up the proportions or something. The front end is just awkward looking. I still wish they would have stuck with the same version they gave the rest of world, but in the USA bigger is better... right?

The first generation 6 was a great car, not too large, good options, better version of the 3.0L Ford V6. And the Mazdaspeed6 with a turbo 4 and AWD in a manual is a perfect setup.

They copied the RX-8 too much on the latest model and the front end does not really blend into the rest of the well for me. It also grew immensely to match with the Accord, Camry, Altima, etc. When it was prior a nice alternative for those who need a 4 door sedan that is not an economy car and not a bloated pig. That and a lack of a MS6 killed it for me.

I agree with everything on your list except:

the Honda CrossTour
the Nissan Rouge (its plain but not ugly)
the Toyota Camry

other thank that your dead on...lol

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... but vehicles such as the Honda CrossTour, Acura ZDX and many others are--if sales are any indication--just plain ugly by most any standard. The proportions are wrong, the concept is weak, and the "styling" just adds insult to injury. On the other hand, ugly cars such as some of Nissan's products may be so bad (think Juke) that they are good. Go figure.

In my opinion, GM is doing some of the best work around in the beauty department, the Terrain being the possible exception.

Management would do well to remember that it is tough to sell a car that most people find difficult to even look at. The funny thing is this: Good design doesn't cost a dime more than a poor design.

One only has to drive past a nissan (and infiniti) dealership, where everything on it except the altima sedan is hideous, or a honda (and acura) dealership, where EVERYthing except the accord coupe makes the eyes bleed, for proof that ugly seems to rule.

The Nissan Juke is the ugliest car on the road today. WTF were they thinking? It looks like the what the Aztec would have evolved into, if they kept making it.
But as bad as some of these designs are, they don't hold a candle to the ugliest car of all time: the 1960 Lincoln Premier. Yikes.

BMW Z4
BMW 1 series
Acura TL
Acura ZDX
Honda Crosstour
BMW X5
Nissan Juke
Hyndai/Kia (All models in general)

Very mature whoever it is that is going through and -1-ing all the comments which question whether the X5 and Z4 deserve to be on this list. This confirms that you probably drive a BMW 5 Series GT and Honda Crosstour.

The Honda Crosstour and Nissan Juke seem to be the ones somebody took an ugly stick to. But you have to have UGLY cars. It's kinda like being in a bar when see a good looking babe, but with an ugly friend. You need your wingman to take the ugly one for a test drive, so you can drive the beauty.

- Acura TL (don't live in America so I've never seen it in person, but it looks like something out of the early Grand Theft Auto games)
- Original Subaru Tribeca
- Subaru Impreza
- Chinese rip-offs of European cars

(sorry if I've missed any major ugly cars lol, as I said before, I don't live in the States so thankfully I miss out on many ugly cars :S)

I'm gonna disagree with both of your comments regarding the x6 and x5. The x6 is a bold shapely design that looks attractive, whilst the x5 is a rounded box with creases in comparison.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I think the X6 looks too bloated. Maybe not a deserved recipient on my list as it's not horrendously ugly, but I still think its exterior design needs work. From the rear I think it looks great but the front doesn't do it for me. I really like the X5; I think it has an aerodynamic and muscular look. Not anything that I'd call 'good looking', but then again, that entire segment isn't exactly home to the world's most beautiful looking cars.

I think we should listen to 009 on this one. After all, 009 is most intimate with BMW and Lexus, the two car mfrs that make the most hideous cars lately so I consider him to be the expert on this matter :-) I think I'm going to go into hiding after this given the traits of BMW and Lexus worshipers on this website :-)

Definitely disagree, particularly with having Hyundai and Kia in top 3 and BMW, Honda and Merc in bottom 5. BMW tend to go for a more 'adventurous' approach in designs, yet we've seen many of these 'controversial' designs grow on people, such as the previous 7 and 5 Series (perhaps the former not so much). What we see from BMW's more outlandish designs is a design that I personally believe ages very well. And Mercedes? Please name one car they've made over their past decades of operation that has a design uglier than something from those two Korean manufacturers you've listed. Yes, Hyundai and Kia are without a doubt improving, but they don't yet have a history of making good-looking cars.

Everything from Acura,Nissan Juke,BMW X3,X6,all Toyota products,Honda Cross Tourer,Honda Accord Sedan,Subaru Imprezza Hatchback. I disagree with some here. I don't think Mercedes makes an ugly car. Some are less attractive but none are truely ugly. The VW Jetta is not ugly at all. It may look a little plain but it's more what i would call handsome conservative. The Nissan Sentra is ugly. The BMW Z4,both previous model and current model are not ugly. However i would not call them beautiful.I wish the BMW 1 series had better shaped headlights though.

Cannot agree more on this post. These days even luxury brands are churning out ugly ones like never before. Just to name a few, of the Mercedes lineup, S-Class, E-Class, GL-Class, GLK-Class are the ones need better design cues. With BMW it is in a lesser dispute, but in the case of X6, 5-GT sedan and 1-series I still find myself scratching my heading every time. With Audi, the lineups are eye-candies, though their US Sales are still catching up with other 2 German makers. As for Porsche, Panamera's backside design is beyond me, but I guess that is the most Porsche can come out on the sedan.
