Mercedes SL killer definitely in development from BMW

AutoWeek is reporting that the Z8 successor is definitely in development and will compete head to head with cars like the Mercedes-Benz SL.

Is the heydey over for the SL?

Sales of all high-end convertibles are slow and this market is a tough nut to crack.

But the Spies believe if anyone can topple Mercedes domination in this market it will be Bangle Motor Works.

The have built tremendous momentum and they have stolen the 'cool' factor away from Mercedes.

What are your thoughts?

Mercedes more or less owns this segment.

Ive been waiting for BMW to do an SL fighter for years.

This looks really good. VERY MODERN.

Cant wait.

BMW cars r less luxury than a lexus
SL customer dun care about ur Ultimate DM gimmick ,
they just want to show off ... and there's always a 911 to interchange

Unless they under cut the price like 7 series has been doing to S class , not a chance
And is not posible to do an Ultimate driving maching With Ultimate edonistic comfort like the SL so with vision quest the BMW will be a lot diferent and will fail again if they attempt to match the SL. The CSI 850 is an example of that. No Way to compare an 600SEC against CSI850. The Bimmer will drive Better for a few thenths, but I am willing so sacrifice those thenths for more securiry and comfort. SL will continue ruling that segment.

In all honesty, the new S-Class is a very handsome car. 99% of MB cars I like the designs of. 5% of BMW's new cars I like. One German auto-exec put it well (to remain anonymous). The following is a quote from a Forbes.com article:

But another car designer--who works for a competing German corporate regime and preferred that we not use his name--said that at their best, the new BMWs are a strong "paradigm shift for the industry." But at their worst, they look to him like "tortured sheet metal--it looks painful to me."

Tortured is a great word to describe how I feel when I look at the 7, 6, 5, X3, and 3-series sedan; It is also how the sheet metal looks.

For me, I prefer the MB and Lexus design more than any BMW. As you can see the new BMWs that keep coming out do not gain reputation as much as they should. Some of them are real ugly, for example, the 3 series and Z4 M roadster. What BMW is doing right now is just ruining the good things about their cars. I mean the previous 3s and z4 are really good looking cars. Why don't they just stick with that design concept?

It is sad but true.

Anyway, I hope the BMW SL-killer will make a punch.

Great looking design. It would be in their best interest to produce something close to that.

They're already on the right track with the 6 series. 6 looks better than the SL now. That would put it over the top.

Beautiful looking BMW, trouble is they never come off the production line looking that good. They promise the world and show you these stunning Concept cars etc, then produce a pile of S***. It would be nice if they did finally produce it looking like that - it would sell well.
