New BMW 1 Series M Coupe 10 Seconds Faster Than A M3 E46 Around Nurburgring?
The fine folks at Skiddmark.com had a chance to snap some pics of the 1M at a Uk photo studio late last week and glean a little info from its handlers. The big nugget for is the Nurburgring time that sources are quoting: 8:12. That’s 7 seconds slower than the E92 M3 but a full 10 seconds faster than the E46 M3. But how does it compare to the larger BMW family?

Still slower than a Audi TT-RS though @ 8:09

The TT-RS is more expensive, and doesn't have 4 seats like the 1M. Plus the ttrs has DSG, give it a manual it would be slower.

Wouldn't the TTrs compete with the rumored 2012 Z4M?

I always think it's funny when people start throwing Ring times at each other that differ by a few seconds. The track is 14 miles long, and we're talking about 8 MINUTE lap times, on different days, with different drivers. Three seconds, out of eight minutes. That's 489 seconds to 492 seconds, a difference of 0.6%, between cars tested on different days by different drivers. Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned that falls within "margin of error" and there's no difference between them (and I'd say the same thing if the BMW's time was 3 seconds faster).

The 1 series is still a four seater, doesn't matter how big or small. you can roll your eyes all you like. The TT is a two seater that competes with the Z4. The 1 series competes with the A3.
Performance wise the 1M is a better deal than the tt-rs.

@ nonofyobus, see above, the performance is identical. But everything else is still true (you can put four people in the BMW, it's less expensive, maintenance is free, etc.). So if it "looks like the BMW is down a class or two from the Audi" to you, maybe you want to have your prescription checked.

They are both quoted to do the quarter mile in 13.2, you would have to have them tested on the same time on a track by the same driver, for lap times...but it looks like the audi is overprices. Kind of like the RS5's flop with the M3.

@nonofyoubus re:"the TT has a back seat just like the 1-series".
Umm, no. The Audi TT holds a grocery bag in each rear seat. My 1er holds my 2 grandkids.

I'm sure the tuners will have a blast with this car. They already have 135's and 335's blowing M3's out of the water with the Vishnu piggyback.Make the suspension a little stiffer, add the piggyback, and throw on some stickier rubber and the times will be improved greatly. You can do all that for $3000 and have the car that this car should have been stock.
