Industry Now Finds Experienced Engineers Are In Short Supply

Ricardo Plc, a service provider to auto companies, is turning to billboards to find engineers as the industry, battered by last year’s bankruptcies of General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, regains sales and production.

Ricardo for the first time put up billboards along Detroit- area highways yesterday and started running radio ads touting the engineering-services company as an employment destination as fuel-economy standards drive demand for efficient powertrains. General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC among others, are hiring as vehicle output recovers from more than 40-year lows.

In America, the best engineers are snapped up by the defence industry and a few others. No one wants to live in Detroit if they don't have to so this will always be a problem. In Germany, they are recruited fairly early and placed into training programs (internships) and molded the way the company sees fit. Audi is now considered the number one most desired employer for engineers. It used to be Porsche a few years ago.

When you have car companies stuck behind so many rules and regulations teamed with the manufacturers own desire to create mundane and boring, undiscernable models. What future is there for engineers. I am shocked that Honda engineers even show up for work anymore, or for that matter that Toyota even still has an engineering department. They must walk around current models with stickers and cardboard to see what the next generations or freshen ups will look like.
