BMW 3-series Named 2011 Automobile Magazine All-Star (For 21st Time)
Add another to the E90/E92 BMW 3-series already crowded award mantel. Automobile Magazine has named the 3-series to its 2011 All-Stars list, for the 21st time.

Perhaps the best summary from Automobile - "As the car enters the sixth year in its current form, it still has no equal."

Dear sport sedan also-rans: You're great cars, and we love spending time with you. We'll never forget the first time we heard the rorty exhaust note of an Infiniti G37, for instance, and we're amazed every time we savor the luxurious interior of an Audi A4. Alas, we can never truly be together, because we're in a committed, long-term relationship with the BMW 3-series. How committed? In the past eighteen years, the 3-series has not once fallen from our grace, winning two Automobile of the Year awards, making twenty-one All-Star appearances (more than once, the M3 and the 3-series each won All-Star awards in the same year), and winning a Technology of the Year award for good measure. As the car enters the sixth year in its current form, it still has no equal.

"Fantastic chassis balance, beautiful steering, lovely shift action," gushes senior editor Joe Lorio. "Add in the phenomenal performance -- and surprisingly good fuel economy -- and you've got the segment's standard-bearer. Again."

The cherry on top for 2011 is the new 335is. With a twin-turbo in-line six boosted to 320 hp, a fortified suspension, and the option of either a slick-shifting six-speed manual or one of the best dual-clutch automatics on the market, this $51,025 coupe strikes us as perhaps the perfect middle ground between the 335i and the somewhat precious M3. Not that we wouldn't love to own an M3. Or a 328i. Or a diesel-fueled 335d, which rivals the acceleration of the M3 that won our Automobile of the Year award in 1995 while attaining 36 mpg on the highway.

I guess the perfect car has been defined, and all other makers should either give up, or start making 3-series clones ;-)

my 2008 335i was the most wonderfully balanced car i've ever owned. it did EVERYTHING really well. it was stupid fun---and made me grin EVERY SINGLE TIME i got in it.

love the 2011 535i that i now drive. but there are days when i see a 335i drive by and i pine for that car.

yes, the 335i is THAT good.

Over rated. Yes its a great daily driver and is nicely balanced. As far as fun factor, anyone who says this car is fun compared to the competition either owns the car and is biased or is a badge whore. I have had way more fun stepping out of a rented G37 I once had.I have driven the four door and coupe and the M. The four door is more fun and exciting than the Audi A4,but what isn't? I have had a better time driving the pontiac G8. Thats fun. The M3 is a great car I do love it and I drive them daily at work, but as far as fun the C63 owns it. The M is good, real good. A little too good. It will make a terrible driver look like he knows what he is doing. It is a little to tamed and calm. The C63 demands a driver that can control a raw animal of a machine. You better be ready for plenty of power slides and neck breaking moments. Its just a much more fun car to drive. I prefer the E46 to the current M3.

well, i've driven them all. taking the M and AMG cars out of the equation, i just can't imagine buying the g37 or the a4 over the 335i. the g37 isn't as comfortable or as tasteful or as precise in handling. don't get me wrong, the g37 is a great car, but if you can swing the extra $10,000 or so, the 335i is no brainer.

The 3er has never appealed to me for many reasons. It's dynamically competent but not that great in other aspects in my opinion. I find cars like the A4, C class or Saab 9-3 far more appealing.

You find the FWD-based A4 and 9-3 more appealing?
