Report: The official start of 2011 Nissan Leaf retailing will be slow-going
The official start of Nissan's Leaf retailing will be slow-going, with few cars available for delivery to about 20,000 U.S. consumers who have made reservations to buy the all-electric car.

San Francisco Bay area resident Olivier Chalouhi recently acquired the world's first retailed Nissan Leaf electric car at North Bay Nissan in Petaluma, Calif. Chalouhi, who until now has commuted 10 miles to and from work on an electric bike he built himself, told Automotive News that he bought the Leaf for 5 percent below its manufacturers suggested retail price.

"GM said it would ship 350 Volts this week to California, Texas, New York and Washington, D.C., which means its volume will quickly exceed that of the Leaf. Is GM crowing about its volume advantage? Of course!"

Not surprising. It took Ford 6-8 months to fill pre-order's on the Fiesta and get a few actual cars for sale onto the dealer lots.

However, there is a big trade off between going slow to make sure that the after launch quality remains high and turning away people with cash in hand at a dealer who has no cars to sell and can't even tell you when they might get one.
