Independent styling firms to face tough times, says Nissan-Infiniti design chief
Nissan-Infiniti Senior Vice President of Design Shiro Nakamura says that independent design houses will have difficulty getting projects from automakers because of major changes in the field.

He says that design is now driven by brands, not trends. For more than a decade, independent styling firms, especially in Italy, noticed that it's more challenging to win a sufficient amount of work with established brands to survive.

Aerodynamics now account for 75% of the "design" and the remaining discretionary design elements are meaningless gaping front air dam holes, bass mouthed grills, and a few lame ass creases, bumps, buldges, and lines.

True automotive design is all but dead.
