Equus Owners Manual In Action, Is This The New Trend?

Equus Owners Manual In Action, Is This The New Trend?
When Hyundai first announced the flagship Equus, one of the most unusual features might have been that the owner's manual was on an iPad.

More gimmick than substance you say? After watching this video of the real owner’s manual in action I want you to be the judge and think of the possibilities.

Customization of the experience is the key here. If they programmed the VIN into the device at the time of purchase, then it could be customized to include only the options your car came with.  Your car would be viewed in the correct exterior and interior colors as well.

Recall notices and service reminders could be sent to the device as well other notifications.  Now it makes you wonder if other companies will follow suit with an  iPad type device or simply create apps to enhance the owner experience.  People like my wife MIGHT actually read the manual for once.

Pretty amazing!

The experience is half the equation.

The most common question by consumers when seeing this gadgetry is "can I get a printed copy?" There is no value added, other than "you get a 'free' iPad".

Its a gimmick. They could do the same thing with a configurable DVD for 1/100th the cost.

This isn't about a better user's manual experience - its about Hyundai trying to latch onto a little bit of that Apple coolness factor (and it ain't working).

Of course, if Hyundai really wanted to do something cool, they'd make the car so easy to use that no user manual would be needed.

And therein lies the real problem - Hyundai continues to be a follower instead of a leader.

I'd play with that manual for hours on a roadtrip while someone else drove the car. Technology sells. My 88 y/o grandfather is still amazed that he can make handsfree phonecalls through bluetooth in his car after having it for a few years; he drives just to screw with the thing. I'm willing to bet the electronic manual will be a huge selling point for the Equus. And will encourage people to actually look at the damned manual for once.

It's a game changer.
The potential is huge, from interactive video assisted tire changes to oil changes to wifi recall notices to promotional sales, to direct contact customer service, etc. Very ground breaking.

Also, with the new iPad coming out in April 2011, the old iPads will be marked down to $199 (maybe lower) - the future of tablets in general is going to be under $300 at worse.

I run an iPad development start up company, and the things we are doing in health care and enterprise with the iPad is exciting. Medical house calls, real time instructional videos, etc. Innovations are coming in left and right on this interactive platform - the key word is "interactive"

Way better than a DVD player at so many levels.

Very convenient! And not as bulky as some owner's manual out there!

I'm assuming you get the iPad with the car? I mean they could just bump the car up $500 to pay for it. If anything the ipad might get more people to buy the car haha. In the end though it is pretty cool

Yeah, it's called marketing! Why is everybody acting so surprised at what the intentions behind it are?
