Great Shot Of The Upcoming Audi R5- Will It Be A 911 Killer?
Dear 001,

Looks like Audi will have another HUGE hit on their hands when the upcoming baby brother to the R8, the R5 hits dealer showrooms.

Maybe even a leading candidate for Car of The Year.

But will it be a 911 killer and will Porsche need an answer?

Check out the latest design shot...

It looks great but I'd have to see more of it. From this vantage point, as good as it looks, it is very contemporary and may lack the timeless design elements of the 911. I'm not sure this design will age as well as the Porsche design has.

Audi-Porsche-VW are headed for commercial trouble down the road. There is great buzz now as its various car lines expand with new entries but
when it it settles down and time for new replacements of existing brands there will be big problems. For, example. VW just announced that
Audi will now be responsible for developing all future Audi and Porsche
SUV's ! This will not be easy, very difficult and compromises between the two will be hard decisions making both brands vulnerable. Does anyone really believe Audi will create as good a Porsche SUV as Porsche
would do on its own ? The Audi people will be loyal to Audi and the infighting will be brutal. Like other gig Auto unions (no pun intended)
VW at some point will implode.

Really ??

The PREVIOUS and CURRENT Porsche Cayenne are/were based on VW Touareg Platforms.

That small fact did not stop Porsche from creating what was unquestionably the best handling SUV on the planet.

So how is AUDI being responsible for future SUV Platform Designs liable to commence the End Of Days ?

When Porsche and VW shared platforms for SUV's they were partners but independant companies. Going forward as one company Porsche will have to
feel the pressure from Audi to follow its SUV lead as the Board has given them the responsibility. If you read the auto trade publications
for industry participants you get the strong feeling that the first battle is currently going on over the appropriate specs on the new
entry level sports car for all three divisions. Time will tell.

Exactly. This isn't a "great shot" of the upcoming R5. It is a rendering.

Why is it that every time there is a new sports car under development the 911 is what it's all about? Man, get a new POV. Agree w/ Inline, wasn't that the R8? Now I guess this will be at about $100k instead of the R8 which now runs to $200k. Easy to make fast cars expensive folks, target the Boxster maybe and increase efficiency to get a better vehicle. This car will be fast, expensive and limited. Hello, that song is way overplayed.

Since Porsche will now develop all of the VW sports cars wont the Porsche versions always be the best/fastest?

PUGPROUD I completely agree. How will VW prevent itself from becoming the next General Motors? With competing products of multiple brands they must waste development time and money splitting resources to compete against itself while nimble companies can focus on game changing products. VW may have bought out a number of competitors, the next mature step is to consolidate the brands not increase their liability by releasing multiple products in the same over-saturated market spaces.

From Bugatti to VW, none of them compete w/ each other, therefore it's not an issue. A potential issue is the sharing of development, which concerns some enthusiast, but doesn't mean anything to general buyer.

Looks nice. AUDI's design finally moves from dumb to something slick.

This is a rendering by someone unassociated with vw. Its pure speculation.

Porsche is responsible to develope all sports cars in VAG,including the R5. I don't think one has to worry about Audi or VW sportscars upsurping Porsche. This is also going to include Bentley and perhaps Lamborghini(not sure on that one). Remember though Porsche will be in control of this. As for the SUV's again it's not going to be a worry. The Cayenne was developed off the Tourag platform. Audi is more than capable of developing an suv for Porsche.

the R8 couldn't "kill" the 911. neither will this...

oh wait we're talking about a f-in picture (in my Sam Kinison voice)!!!

The R5 will not be a 911 killer. It probably will be on par, performance wise, with the TT RS.

Audi cant even beat BMW. Now they're going after Porsche? Good Luck.

Audi is not going after Porsche because Porsche is in control of sportscar developement. VAG would not allow that to happen now that
Porsche is becoming part of them. It's that simple.
