2011 4x4 of the Year: Lexus GX 460

2011 4x4 of the Year: Lexus GX 460
Lexus is the luxury arm of Toyota, and the Lexus GX 460 is the luxury version of the foreign SUV the Prado. The Prado shares many suspension components with the Toyota FJ Cruiser, and since the FJ Cruiser is one of the most capable 4x4s in Toyota's current fleet, the GX 460 should be fairly capable. And it is, to a point.

In 2003 the GX 470 won 4x4 of the Year, and this new GX grows off of that truck with many improvements. The slightly smaller 4.6L (281.2ci) V-8 offers 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque. A six speed transmission follows with a fulltime transfer case. The Lexus has kept a solid rear axle, but there is no locking rear differential as in prior GXs as well as 4Runners and FJ Cruisers.

Underneath, the transmission pan and exhaust seem susceptible to trail damage, and oddly the gas tank is only partially covered by skidplates. There are front and rear recovery points, but they are small and look designed as transport tie-downs. Lexus admirably removed the standard running boards, a request we have made countless years to all manufacturers. Unfortunately, we still sent the truck back with rocker panel dings.

For rockcrawling the Lexus carries over the Crawl mode slow-speed, brake-based traction cruise control that we first saw in the latest Land Cruiser as well as last year's 4Runner. This system works well but is noisy, as the brakes constantly lock and unlock to ensure traction. We would rather have a full locking differential option versus techno-wizardry.

The street-spec tires could be improved, as could ground clearance. We would have also appreciated some true rocker protection along the lines of the Grand Cherokee and previously tested Land Cruisers.

In the hillclimb section of our test the GX was capable, but again suffered from AAD (approach angle deficiency). The plastic front bumper sustained more carnage while the tire treads got chewed up hunting for traction. The Crawl mode helped, though many judges found the truck adequate without it stating, "It climbs! It doesn't look like it will, but it does."

As far as looks and amenities go, this $60K-plus sport/ute left us bored. It doesn't look bad, just not exciting. The interior is nice but feels dated, with lots of weird little doors hiding cup holders, cubbies, and dash controls. The component quality is all there, but it feels high-class in an '80s way.

Back in the dirt we noticed the GX had good power for the high-speed runs, but when rattling across washboards it skitted around rather than soaked it up like the two 4WIS contenders. The gated transmission shifter also annoyed drivers trying to shift quickly.

During the sand dune testing, a plethora of warning bells and nannies were yelling at us as we rallied the luxo-Lexus. The engine would rev to the moon but only get to the ground after we worked to shut off stability controls. As with the Raptor, we could notice the solid rear axle compared to the other SUVs.

Overall the Lexus GX 460 is a very nice vehicle. It has many amenities (sometimes too many), a comfortable ride, and adequate power. Unfortunately it also looks and feels too mature for most of our judges. The styling of all Toyota/Lexus SUVs is starting to blur. Other than the 4Runner and FJ, Toyota/Lexus needs to freshen up. If you're living in a retirement community and need a nice capable 4x4, this may be it, but don't expect anyone to confuse you with your grandson in his Raptor.

The Good
•High-revving engine
•Crawl mode works
•Luxurious

The Bad
•Expensive
•No rocker protection
•Boring luxury looks

A great truthful article, I am as baffled as to how this princess could have won such a title, it didn't say who named it four wheeler of the year? Again for all of you blind fan boys this is a nice suv and has some limited capability, I like this statement in the end of the article! lol " If you're living in a retirement community and need a nice capable 4x4, this may be it, but don't expect anyone to confuse you with your grandson in his Raptor.

4x4 of a the year? makes no sense. try a land rover, range rover or even a jeep.

This truck rides great, can go anywhere, has great quality, and can still provide the luxury. The Jeep is kinda in a different category, but the GX definitely deserves the award, ahead of any Land Rovers.

go see what people drive in remote regions of the world....deserts, african plains, etc. the vehicle of choice is a land/range rover. off road capabilities of rovers are unrivaled.

agreed! This is no 4x4. Can it tow? No rocker protection? that violates all rules of 4x4! This is such a joke.

I know Lexus and Toyota make the best vehicles, but I don't typically associate Lexus with 4x4.

The Toyota Prado (what the car really is) should be the 2011 car of the year. In country's like the Philippines it costs more than double the GX itself and is just as luxurious imo.

Totally deserves the award. Very few manufacturers(Toyota, Nissan and Land Rover) make models of this category. Magazines should encourage manufacturers by giving them such awards to make more of these rare segment(Luxury offroad capable) SUVS.

It is definitely one of the best in it's very small class.

Agent63

Prado and GX460 are same thing. Just like Land Cruiser and LX570.
Prado is 4 and 6 cylinder only and GX460 is V8 only. If one gets the award it means both models received the award. And no way Prado is twice the price of GX460 anywhere. Prado is the cheaper variant.

Yes in emerging and third world countries the Toyota Prado 4.0 VXL will cost you almost U.S$100,000+ when you add an import duty tax of 100%.

I really like the Gx470/Land cruisers they are very capable, and well built suvs. They definitely don't get the attention they deserve.

I don't beleive it not over the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. I think its fixed just like how the Volt won car of the year.

This article paints a completely different picture of this vehicle, You Toyota fans should be angrily disagreeing with it and defending why you disagree with the article, one huge point I agree with is I am not a fan of brake traction control that this vehicle has, Imagine trying to do a steep hill climb in loose terrain! When the wheels loose traction the vehicle won't spin a wheel and it will just stop, Other vehicles like the Jeep Rubicon, Hummer H-3 Alpha and the Raptor with two lockers will just keep going, with wheel spin of coarse, wheel spin is essential in many off road situations, this blog is more a popularity vote blindly following other blogers as opposed to debating what is really going on, If we are all like this vehicles will stop being competitive, give credit where credit is due, and for the record I have owned three toyota 4x4s and I am an avid off road nut, my Toyota's have gone everywhere. And yes they had there shortcomings, My 1976 Bronco was the best off road, Although the Toyota s were more reliable, then again I wasn't as rough on my Toyota's, I did huge jumps in my Bronco, cracked axle housings, I have almost flipped it backwards driving up such steep terain, this Toyota could only go half the places I have gone in my Bronco, And I am a fan of the Land Cruiser s with the solid axles, this IFS with the limited wheel travel belongs on cars, IFS is great with a min of 12 inches of wheel travel.

Being the 4X4 of the year it would seem the off road capability should be the strong point. Let me take this thing off road and I will show ya how incompetent the 460 really is. Princess is the perfect word. This is a slap in the fact to the many other more diserving 4X4s.

"This is a slap in the fact to the many other more diserving 4X4s"

Name them. And don't write Wranglers and Defenders because they are not luxury SUVs. Name the SUVs which provide this much luxury and comfort yet so good at offroading.

From Car Magazine road test:

"Okay, we’ll come back to that, but surely it’s heavier and therefore not as good in the dunes?

Actually it’s about the same weight – so all the benefit of the extra power, without any disadvantages. And that really pays off when it comes to off roading. We experienced the car in the Maha Desert Reserve with, admittedly, a skilled off-road driver, but it seemed there were no dunes that would put the car or driver off.

And the approach angles appeared remarkably steep for what is meant to be a blingy luxury SUV, without any adverse impact on the bumpers either on the way up, or on the drop down.

The only issue that the driver seemed to be having was the stability control kicking in every now and then, reminding him to be smooth and gentle on the occupants. All this without him even using the multi-terrain select.

It is completely surreal to be able to go wherever you please in a desert whilst sitting in a perfectly climate controlled cocoon of comfort surrounded by quality trim and exquisite build, with the Mark Levinson in-car entertainment on in the background "

And don't forget to check the photos. Seems like majority of the test was conducted at dunes and tough offroad conditions.

People take these luxury SUVs offroad or not is not the question fact is it is a very capable offroad luxury SUV.

The point I was trying to make is the "4X4 of the year" catagory. Does not say "luxury SUV 4X4 of the year". By doing so they put this vehicle in comparison with many "4X4s" that are much better Off Road. I feel that vehicles such as the 460 luxury SUV should be in there own catagory rather than bundled with say the RAM Powerwagon.

- The FJ has not share suspension parts with Prado. FJ based on 120 but the new Prado (150) suspension looks similar with 120.
- Prado (150) crawl is not so ratling, no so noisy.
- Prado (150) exterior-interior design is rather differ from GX
