Rumor: Nissan working on a lighter version of its GT-R sports car
According to the latest reports from Japan’s Best Car Magazine, it seems that Nissan is working on a lightweight version of the GT-R sports car. Yes, it appears that the Japanese engineers are not satisfied with the performances offered by the GT-R (currently, one of the fastest production cars on the market) and want to offer more for their customers. As you may know already, the 2012 Nissan GT-R made its debut in November,

I wonder if they would consider removing the AWD system (it has to be quite heavy).

The GT-R is already a beast of a machine, if they do make it lighter, it will be insanely untouchable.

One of the best thing about GT-R is that Nissan is continuesly developing it. There have been so many improvements made already in little more than 3 years like software updates, transmission updates, power updates(480BHP to 485BHP), variants(Spec V) and now a throughly revised model for 2011.

@JUGNU,

the new 2012 Nissan GT-R will have 530 horsepower instead of 485 hp.

I'm all for putting the GT-R on a little diet. Let's make sure you send her to the gym so she'll a little stronger, like 600 bhp.

I'm down for keeping the AWD system, but how about loosing the, "for insurance purposes only", rear seats and gaining some additional Carbon-fiber bits!

@MorePower,

yeah I am with you about removing the Nissan GT-R back seats, it not like anyone is going to seat back there. That should save some weight and it would be nice to give the Nissan GT-R 600 hp, that would be absolute madness....!

Removing the back seats would not significantly help the performance. They are not too heavy to begin with. I rather have rear seats to throw my jacket or a bag of something.

Nissan engineers are nuts..... they should focus on a lighter FI engine for G and Z. Leave GT-R alone!

I know refreshed GT-R makes 530BHP but i was talking about the 2009 engine upgrade of GT-R when the power was increased from 480BHP to 485BHP.
