Paris Sets The Stage To Ban SUVs

Paris Sets The Stage To Ban SUVs
Paris is planning to test restrictions on gas-guzzling vehicles, likely including sport utility vehicles, as part of attempts to curb pollution.

Denis Baupin, an environmental official in the mayor's office, said Wednesday that sport utility vehicles and old diesel cars are likely to be targeted in upcoming test restrictions.

Many SUVs beat sedans and on gas mileage. It should be on gas usage and not type of vehicle.

Or perhaps on emissions footprint, regardless of vehicles. If you want to reduce pollution, target the polluters.

I must agree, there are too many politicians ready to bow to enviro nuts,A 2 stroke moped polutes as much as a SUV, then again if you had to move a family of 5 100miles,and you had to move them in smart cars it would take 3 Smart cars, so suddenly the idea of Smart cars doesn't work for everyone, That would make it more economical to move them in a Hummer H-3 T Alpha! Do the math! 3 smart cars works out to 13.6 hwy/11city , The H-3 Alpha is 14/16, so this logic is dumb! Sounds like another politician fishing for brownie points.

My Mercedes GL350 diesel gets 25mpg on average. And my new 2011 Cayenne Turbo gets upwards of 20mpg in mixed driving. I think those are pretty economical numbers.

I don't think it's just a matter of fuel economy. I think size of vehicle vs purpose is another consideration that went into this experiment. With the possible exception of Russia, Australia and Africa, my travel points to me that the rest of the world have smaller streets, older and more confined neighborhood where these SUVs are causing more congestion. In any case, I don't know why we like to attack the French so much. After all, if that's what they want to try out, that's their business. I don't understand we like to make fun of or attack those that do things differently from us.

It would be interesting if the French listed the reasons, but in its absence, we can just speculate. It may also have to do with other considerations. SUVs are still substatially heavier and larger:
* Making and disposing of them uses substantially more energy and resources
* Their heavier weight causes the road beds to deteriorate faster
* Safety of pedestrians and people in smaller cars when hit by SUVs

Different country with different politics, I do like their first lady though. As long as Americans keep getting bigger( I am also an American, but I am not fat), there will always be a place for large suv on American roads.

It's all about emissions in this case - the environment offical says that SUVs and old diesels are 'most likely to be affected'.

Well with big cities that have high conjestion problem I think it makes sense. For example Manhattan is a ridiculous place to own or drive an SUV,let alone a car.I think in cities that have a conjested down town area should have at leat restricted zones. Perhaps it could be narrowed down to SUV's that are Tahoe sized and up that the restriction should be put on. Further I think it should extend to trucks. Like anything larger then an F150 for example. No SUV's or Trucks that size and larger get great gas mileage. In my view Trucks and large SUV's need to be at 25 MPG combined minimum.

There are much more SUV's on the road than supercars, hence your logic is flawed.

Compare 4 Smart cars against the SUV that carries 8 passengers, the SUV becomes more economical to move the 8 people, this whole thinking is political PC BS! And ignorance at its best!

Very true. Also many large or faster cars do decent mileage since the engine is not struggling and many small cars get shitty mileage. As an example the Corvette can beat many smaller sedans on gas mileage.

They should just convert them all to run on old french fry oil

I challenge any of you so called enviro nuts to prove my logic wrong! For the record I am very conscious of the environment,
