VIDEO: Is Volkswagen Poking Fun At Chris Bangle?
In today's competitive small car environment, the hottest sellers are offering extremely competitive packages. Prices are getting lower, standard equipment lists are getting higher and styling is becoming sharper.

The days of the ugly, slow and poorly equipped economy car are over. You can thank the global economic collapse for that!

Regardless, the Agents came across this advertisement featuring the 2011 Volkswagen Jetta sedan and we noticed that one of the "tormented" designers bears an uncanny resemblance to Chris Bangle, formerly of BMW.

Was this by design and is VW poking fun at one of the automotive industry's most influential designers? Or, is merely a coincidence?

It take that many designers to make something that bland?

The whole Cadillac line up could be designed by a 10 year old kid with a ruler.

Sorry, I don't see the connection with Bangle (even with the photo tip of a bearded designer). I thought it had to do with designers racking their brain to the point of forgetting to shave trying to come up with a good design in the studio, and for all of that hard work, at such a reasonable price.

I agree I dont see it either....but for anyone to knock Bangle is a str8 FOOL because look at where he did for BMW within the last decade and if they are knocking him maybe they are putting a job out there for him telling him to come work for VW (INDIRECTLY...lololol) because god know that VW/Audi need him tremendously if a newer audi was coming down the highway from behind you would say its an A4 until it passes you and its either an A5,A6, or A8

yeah "NOW" that can be said what about the Bangle ERA....hmmmmm..... not but this "Adrian van Hooydonk" character has taken all the agressivness out of the BMW's and took the safe approach which audi has done for years and made the design uhhhhh "SAFE AND SIMPLE" it kinda bothers me that BMW went this route but it also gives the BMW's a cleaner look. the bland look never worked for me and now the images of the new A6 and A7 complete the bland audi look also

For Bangle Critics: Mr. Bangle carried out the orders from the Ivory Tower: Create 3 designs, one conservative, one middle-of-the-road, and one pushing the envelope. The Ivory Tower chose which of those designs went into production, and the world (save for a few die-hard BMW FanBoiz) voted against it with the kindest words being "polarizing" and "not for everyone," while less kind words called the designs unattractive.

Like a good soldier, Bangle towed the company line, never blaming the Ivory Tower for making the "wrong" decision. And thus, Bangle became the scapegoat for one of BMW's darker chapters in design history. But we must remember, Chris Bangle's also created some of BMW's most beautiful designs as well, such as the iconic Z8. So he and his team certainly knew their stuff.

Similarly, today, Adrian van Hooydonk is designing as per the directive from the Ivory Tower: back off the mistakes we made in the past decade; bury "flame surface"; create a contemporary look while not forsaking classic design. In other words, return to something more traditional looking.

By slamming Bangle or van Hooydonk, we're shooting the messenger, and forgetting where the message came from.

Bangle didn't create the Z8...Henrik Fisker did. Plus, why would a designer deliberately make his ideal design out of three concepts ugly? I say he can't tell a beauty contentent apart from a burn ward patient.

EvilHomer - I was going to post something along the same line as you "...the whole world revolves around BMW..." but I figured why bother. But I'm glad to see your post though :-)

No, because it wasn't negative about him. A good dig would have been a shot of this guy taking a chainsaw to a car from the A pillar line down toward the wheel (Z4) or chopping up the back (7), or just making a general mess of everything and covering it up with gray primer paint(Z4 M Coupe).

OOR says "Is Volkswagen Poking Fun At Chris Bangle?"

It never fails to surprise me, that which is in the mind of the Conspiracy Theorist.

I see OOR is trapped in his home in Bergen County by the big blizzard and is getting cabin fever.
