Ford not concerned about the Chevrolet Camaro outselling the Mustang?
Apparently, the impressive sales showed by the new Chevrolet Camaro are not so important for Ford. George Pipas, Ford’s sales analyst, said that the American manufacturer is not particularly concerned about the fact that the Chevrolet Camaro will outsell the Mustang this year for the first time since 1985. “If that was important, we wouldn't have taken a shift off at Flat Rock,” the Michigan factory where Ford builds the Mustang.

The mustang is doing fair, when companies try to be number one thats when they lose focus of who there customers are and want and this is when a company fails. Focus on making good cars not outselling the next guy.

Also be aware that Ford did not come out with the upgraded engines until late Spring/Early Summer of 2010 with the 2011 models. That means that the base Mustang was saddled with the anemic 4.0 V6 at 210 HP and the 4.6 V8 at 325HP for 5-6 months. That might have left them at a disadvantage with the Camaro. However, saying this, I think it is seriously time for a major restyling of the Mustang. The current body style has been around since 2005. Yes it was tweek in the headlights and tail lamps for 2010 but that's not enough now. Both the Camaro and the Challenger are ,frankly, better looking. Ford needs to take note if it is to remain competative. Further Dodge has now upped the ante with 305HP V6 and better sportier suspension on all Challenger models. So now both Challenger and Camaro have IRS with the Mustang still with a solid rear axle. Granted Ford has done a simply amazing job with the Mustang chassis but it is really reaching it's limits. It's time for a new platform from Ford or Mustang is going to be left behind. Suggestion since all 3 of these cars are retro based, Ford could take inspiration from the 71 Mustang Mach One on the next restyle. That was a very cool looking car.

This is such an Americana thing. Mini cars will occasionally do well here as they regularly do well overseas. SUVs will occasionally do well in Europe as they regularly do well here. Minivans are becoming a regular staple everywhere as do these cross-over thingy. Heck, even diesels and hybrid have limited success outside of Europe and US respectively. But the American muscle cars can only sell here in the US. It is the ultimate niche segment and Ford, GM and Chrysler can thank their lucky stars that this niche segment is in the super large US car market.

I'm with Ford on this. The backlog of Camaro sales after being out of
the market for so long is currently being filled. Ford has a lot of
buzz going with various Mustang models (new engines, Boss, etc) and
more to come. Lets judge sales on a more normalized basis in 2012 &
2013.

the mustang will limp along with solid but unremarkable sales until an all-new model comes out in time for the 50th anniversary in CY 2013-2014

Ford can give a shit. Have you driven a 2011 5.0? Forget that, have you driven a 2011 V6? My girl has the 2011 V6 premium. Im amazed at how ford has changed this car fully around. 305 hp and 30 mpg while pulling .92-94 on the skidpad is amazing.I have also driven the Camaro and was not impressed. The SS was decent and I really did want to love this car as I have owned several muscle cars in the past, but it didnt do it for me. The interior is so plain and cheap it was embarassing to show my friends. Not to say the Mustangs interior is beautiful, but its better. If Chevy can work on the handling and make the Camaro feel as light on its feet as the Stang, than Ford should start worrying.

Also like someone said, the new models didn't come out until a few months ago so its hard to decide who the real winner is. I know once the reviews came out on the new V6 and 5.0 we had to travel to Jersey from NY to find a 2011 V6 close to what she wanted. Most were sold out and the ones that werent were like base models.
