PLACE YOUR BETS! What Is Porsche Bringing To Detroit?
Here ye! Here Ye!

As you already probably know, Porsche has said that it has a new model coming to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. And if you haven't heard, its press conference is at a mind numbing 6:30 a.m. I guess that's what happens when you don't show up for several years.

Although I don't think anyone wants to be up in that brisk Detroit air, Porsche has made it known that you should want to be there. With that said, this led to Agent 001 and I e-mailing back and forth last night trying to figure out what the big unveil could possibly be.

This is where you come in because there are several options:

1) 918-based production car, *which AutoBild is claiming a 918 Coupe will be at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show

2) The Cajun, baby sport-utility vehicle

3) A Panamera Coupe

With a 918-based production vehicle it just seems entirely too predictable given that the company revealed the out-of-nowhere 918 Spyder. Perhaps Porsche is going to pull a fast one and do one of those "Here is the 918 Coupe and guess what, it's on sale today," type of things.

Or could it be the "raging" Cajun SUV? Porsche has admitted in recent months the company is looking to expand its lineup and what better way to continue this than celebrating with a new, sporty SUV offering? Seems like Detroit would be the right venue for a truck revelation.

Here's the wildcard. Porsche's four-door Panamera has done exceedingly well, probably better than 90 percent of what the market was thinking. Keeping this in mind, the brand desperately needs another sales success to continue bringing in profit for Porsche. Wouldn't this be the best solution to do so?

**Do some thinking and let us know, which car do you think Porsche is bringing to the Motor City. If you have a conspiracy theory, make sure to let us know and spell it all out for us!

I am going with Panamera Coupe...928 successor.

Cajun. The large SUV is the company's highest selling, and probably most profitable model. Why not try for another hit?

I hope so 2 but.............

there's been no two door test mules to date or even a hint of a 928 concept that is ready to be shown.

My money is on some version of the 918.....

Whatever it is, it will say a lot about where the company direction will be. Will they light up their path with 918, or fall into darkness with another SUV?

any 918 variant = boring. who needs another hypercar nobody can afford

cajun = boring

panamera coupe. now this is more interesting. provided it looks alot meaner/sharper than panamara and is 700 pounds lighter. now that would be nice. and i hope its not called 'panamera coupe'!

also possible is a smaller model below boxster based on VWs bluesport. interesting however boxster doesn't excite me then i doubt a smaller model will

my money is on a panamera coupe. mainly coz i doubt porsche would have used the word 'spectacular' for a small SUV or smaller boxster, or a 918 concept/variant which has already been displayed

I'm curious when they are going to bring an A1 type of vehicle. I mean BMW is doing it, Audi is doing it, Aston Martin is even doing it. Almost all the luxury Germans and others are gearing up for small luxury, so I am waiting to see when Porsche will dive into the VW parts bin to creat a Porsche version of the Polo.

Likely 928. Early Press Conference is a PR ploy to get the word out
early in the day and on sites like this. Most people check their
favorite sites first thing in AM and before work. With all the pre-
announcement buzz it better be good or it will be viewed as the
VWing of Porsche.

You know they (Porsche) said a spectacular surprise. If you take them at their word then you could deduce the following. The 918 has already been out there for a while so is it really a surprise? I don't think so. It already known that Porsche will produce it in limited quantity. A surprise means somthing we were not expecting. What could that be. A 928 successor based on the Panamera. Perhaps the smaller Porsche beleow the Boxster/Cayman.The Cajun. Or perhaps a real surprise that has not been discussed in the media yet. How about a 3 series competator. Again if it is really supposed to be a spectacular surprise it would have to be the 928 Panamera,a 3 series sedan,or perhaps more then one new car.

Whatever they bring to Detroit, will be light years ahead of whatever they can build in Detroit.

Theres no room or market for a panamera coupe. For what? Why would they need one? Where would it fall?I'm going to say it 100% wont be that. The most likely one is the Cajun. It just makes sense to show it now.

Showing a 3 dr SUV is not what one would call a "spectacular surprise".I'm banking on somthing that has perhaps been kept in secret and has not been talked about before. The baby Porsche, the Cajun, and the 918 have all been talked about at nauseum in the media. A 928 Panamera Coupe has been talked about extremly little and a 3 series sedan has never been talked about. Therefore one of those choices along with the 918 and baby Porsche is my guess. The new 911 would not be a spectacular surprise as there have been enough photos that most can pretty much figure out what it's going to look like.

What I really would like to see and would buy from Porsche is a small four door sedan like a Sabaru WRX...now that would be spectacular !

Dealer confirmed today that its a mid engined Sports Car above the 911 range .. apparently they see this as a 458 competitor because of the amount of customization that will be available. We will wait and see!

Detroit is a US market autoshow, needs a large GT / coupe type (not cramped as are the 911s for U.S. customers) so the 928 /929 based on panamera chassis/drivetrain , in coupe and convertible guise.

uhn2000. If you are correct and it is a mid engined car above the 911 then I'm guessing the following. The car would have a V8 engine from the Panamera placed midships on a chassis based on the Cayman if it is to compete with the 458 Ialia. Thats at $270,000 roughly. That is significantly less then what the potential asking price of the 918 was.If it is this high end then it's going to sell in limited quantities and is really not a game changer for Porsche at all.

Well it appears I'm partially right. It's going to to mid engined and will have a V8. However to my dissapointment it's based on the 918 Spyder concept except it will be a coupe. That means it will be a very limited production high end vehicle over 200 grand. The only interest
will be "what" V8 Porsche uses. Will it be based on the V8 architecture of the Cayenne/Panamera?

I just read that the "918 Coupe" to be shown in Detroit is going to be another concept car. Not a production vehicle. So the question is this. Is Porsche trying to through everyone off the track or did they just blow a lot of smoke to try and stir up enthusiasm for the brand? I would like to believe the former and will be very dissapointed to find out the latter.
