Would You Be Embarrassed To Say You Own An American Car?

Would You Be Embarrassed To Say You Own An American Car?
With the federal bailout of the auto industry still fresh in our minds, both General Motors and Chrysler are viewed by many as relics of the past.  Something of an embarrassment you might say, still clinging to old school values in a new school world.

So maybe I was a bit surprised when I saw a post on Facebook from a friend proudly proclaiming he had finally "purged" the family of all American cars.  They now were free from the embarrassment and stigma of owning an American car. The really odd thing in his post was that the last remaining American car was actually a Ford product, a brand that actually had the foresight to correct their problems without the need of federal assistance. It simply didn't make sense.

Now typically I dismiss such a post pretty readily as just another non car guy spouting off.  But what caught me off guard was the number of comments supporting his move, and several even listed dates they were “American Free”.

How could this be? Have the American companies screwed themselves over so well with the buying public that owning an American could be akin to your family having lice?   Please tell me there is some hope for the Detroit 3 out there.  I really have a hard time imagining us as a country where we no longer can lead in a major consumer industry.

Has owning an American car become an embarrassment?

"Would You Be Embarrassed To Say You Own An American Car?"

- No. Only an insecure fool would do that.

I currently drive a Toyota and a Mini. I'm planning my next car to be American. There are plenty of vehicles out there now that are quite appealing to me. As far as an SUV is concerned I may go for a Jeep Compass now that it has the off road package. Further when I can afford it I might replace my Mini CooperS with a Mustang GT or Dodge Challenger RT(or even a Dodge Charge RT).I see no reason to buy a foreign car today unless I want to spend more money up market for an Audi BMW or Porsche. But if I want to stay in the low 30's or less in price it will be an American car for me.The only possible exception is if Alfa returns to the US(Which supposidly they are. I'll believe it when I see it.)

Or put another way....if you're going to spend the money, might as well get something good. But if you're going to buy a POS might as well go hog wild!

I am embarrassed to own a Subaru WRX and have to tell every god damn girl I ever dated what the hell that is and that its not a lesbian car. So I tell them I have a Jeep wrangler first for the weekends and my everyday driver is a WRX...I don't say Subaru...UGH!

I have friends with foreign cars and when speaking with them they don't care if it's foreign or domestic many of them want what is the performing or looking car out at the time. My CTS gets many looks and many people that are not car people cant believe that it IS a Cadillac until the see the emblems on the inside. American cars mostly Ford/GM are competing well with the foreign makes so many people dont mind one just look at the above comments. If this question was asked just 5 years ago I pretty sure the outcome would be different.

This should be asked more on a car-by-car basis. Yes to a few Chrysler/Dodge products (e.g. Avenger/Sebring), few Lincoln (Town Car), and older Buicks, Chevys and Mercurys. The rest -which are the majority- are fine, specially Jeep and Cadillac.

I agree that it should be car by car....but then you shoot yourself in the foot and say Sebring....really!!?!?! Sebring is terrible.

I havent owned a domestic since getting the family Torino in the 70's, but would be glad to buy a Ford sedan if they ever manage to put out a decent RWD platform. Put the old Volvo S80 chassis to rest, finally, and engineer a competitive RWD platform.

I'm assuming a new platform will be used for a new Mustang in a few years, and that platform will also spawn several Ford and Lincoln sedans. The least they can do is try to keep up with Hyundai.

Actually Ford DID take over $5 billion in federal money in 2009, but who cares? The domestic renassaince is in full swing. The Detroit manufacturers are now GAINING market share over the Japanese--because their products now compete fully with all comers.

The majority of Foreigners hate American cars and anything America makes. If everthing here is Soooo bad they should not come here at all.I am saying this and I am a foreigner. All 3 of my cars are American and they never break down. They do not need to be babied with timinig belt/water pump changes etc that foreign cars have (which many owners cannot even afford in their fancy cars)

Would You Be Embarrassed To Say You Own An American Car?
Please Grow up. If you feel that way for the car you drive, you need maturity. Only boys and girls will pay attention to that question in my humble opinion.

I would not be embarrassed at all to own an American car. In fact, I would absolutely buy either a CTS-V coupe, CTS-V wagon or a Camaro SS if the UAW leeches hadn't been handed partial ownership of GM by the current White House administration, which btw, received huge campaign contributions from the UAW. (Outside of the gov't that's called bribery. In DC it's called business as usual.) So long as the UAW maintains an ownership stake, I will never buy a GM product. Unfortunately, nothing Ford currently offers piques my interest.

I proudly drive a 2011 Ford Mustang GT/CS. I am surprised at people who say they will never drive American. This is a great car, with all the bells and whistles, flawless Candy Red Metallic paint, plus 412 hp and a 6sp Getrag manual, for $34000 (Sticker was 36). Oh, and I am averaging 21-24 mpg city and highway combined, on regular gas. I have seen 26 on a short 70 mile trip cruising at 75, with the A/C on. Over 5500 miles and six months old, not a rattle or squeek. And, I have not been back to the dealer since I bought it.

"UAW_LAX. Thanks for the link. So your link proves the we the poor tax payers will never recoup the billions we wasted on GM. Those analysis in the article are pointing out the stocks are still selling around $35 which is WAY below the required price to recoup the billions wasted on saving GM.

OH Well. At least Obama purchased a bunch of Union votes when he gave a huge chunk of the company to the Detroit Mafia."

So let me get this straight. The government spending tax dollars on American jobs and companies is a waste? And the spending of tax dollars on foreign wars that cannot be won is what exactly? Forgive me but I never really understood economics. Unfortunately for you, my friend, you don't seem to understand it that well either. You see, tax dollars, unless you live in a socialist environment, is not recoverable because it doesn't really go towards us "the poor tax payers" but straight into the pockets of politicians and their friends. But of course, the very mention of American citizens benefiting from some government aid is socialist/communist and is to be shunned, isn't it? Read a book and speak less, my friend. Your intelligence would likely benefit greatly.

That said, I am not American nor do I live in America. But I can appreciate a good car and right now American-nameplates (be they built in USA, Canada, Mexico, Korea, or Germany) are damn good vehicles. I wouldn't consider any other nationality for my next car because frankly, I don't trust European reliability and I don't dig Japanese styling. The Koreans have my attention (I've owned two in the past), but the Americans have a notch more class that I find intriguing.

"So let me get this straight. The government spending tax dollars on American jobs and companies is a waste? "

Tango, the deal between the Obama administration and the UAW union is worse than a waste. confiscating income from taxpayers and redistributing our money to union workers to pay them back for their political support is obscene. And let's not forget, the greed of the UAW contributed heavily to the demise of GM to begin with. Not only should the union leeches not be rewarded for their behavior, their political payback should not be paid for with the other American workers' income.

What's the difference between UAW and the military contractors? Everybody points the fingers at the UAW but Dick Cheney is rolling in the money his company and cronies got because of the wars(but I guess they don't lobby anybody at all).....People have very short memories.

FYI the only manufacturer in the top 10 in campaign contributing company for 1998-2010:

Lockheed Martin
