VW predicts sales of new midsize sedan to exceed 60,000 units on first year
For the first full year of sales, Volkswagen expects the American "New Midsize Sedan" (or NMS) to sell over 60,000 units, according to MotorTrend. The German carmaker is optimistic that the NMS will sell well since it is priced lower than the current Passat (which will be discontinued soon). Volkswagen's Passat is priced at $27,665 for the sedan and at $29,095 for the wagon version in the U.S. This means that if Volkswagen goes through with its plan to make this upcoming model more affordable, then it could be retailed for under $25,000.

Hey genius,

60,000 are impressive in terms of sales given that VWs aren't exactly great value anymore.

Toyota has MORE MODELS in the US than VW.

Toyota has MORE CHEAPER MODELS in the US than VW.

Toyota has a better reputation for RELIABILITY than VW.

No sh*t that Toyota will outsell VW in the US or anywhere else (aside from Europe). That said, Toyota products sell based on perceived quality and value. That's it. A VW carries far more emotional cache given their far more intriguing lineup styling and the perception that their cars are dynamically more engaging to drive than Toyotas - which for the most part, they are.

You heard me. VW makes products that excite people. VW produces cars that some people buy based on an emotional aspect, not logical.

I can't think of any Toyota that is sold in the US that actually would excite any car enthusiast, much less a person who cares a little about cars. The RAV4 and new 4Runner might barely qualify, but that's it. People don't get passionate or excited about a Corolla or Yaris.

VW's best model is the Jetta with about 100,000 yearly sales, selling around 60,000 of the NMS is a good and reasonable goal for the first year.
