Volkswagenized? 2014 Bugatti Galibier To Be Based On Audi's A8?
Being a part of Volkswagen Auto Group means plenty of good things: part sharing, plenty of cash and hopefully an economy of scale. But to some, it could bring about some bad things.

Word on the street is suggesting that the upcoming Bugatti sedan may utilize the Audi A8 as a foundation. Well, you can't really blame Bugatti for this. Considering the A8 drives well and it would likely help cut costs, especially when it went all out on the Veyron, one would think Bugatti wants to make a profit for VWAG at some point.

However, is it going to destroy the appeal of Bugatti?

I mean, the same plan worked for Bentley when it used the Volkswagen Phaeton as the underpinning for the Continental GT/Flying Spur, no?

German magazine Der Spiegel reports that Bugatti is planning the release of a new luxury sedan for 2014, based on the Audi A8. Using existing technology will provide a significant reduction in development cost. The new luxury limousine will be a blueprint of the 16C Galibier, which debuted in September 2009 at the IAA...

Nothing wrong with using an all aluminum spaceframe as your basis, not many cars even have that technology at any price level.

LOL coming from the audi fanboys..

Oh! No there is nothing wrong. Its a VW their crap smells like roses. Throw a Phaeton chassis on a Bugatti. Great Idea..

..As long as who ever buys this heap knows they are getting ripped off. Its great. They should fabricate a racing history like they did with Bentley while their at it, and jack the price up even more.

Your annoying go away... Who said anything about BMW? BMW has been using 4 cylinders for over 30 years(first M3 was a 4 cylinder).

I do smell that. Its probably time for your mom to change your diaper.

It has more to do with rising oil prices and strict emissions regulations than is has ANYTHING to do with audi. BMW sold 220,000 units in America for 2010 w/o a four cylinder. Audi sold less than half 101,000...with 4 cylinders.

Not to sure where you are trying to go with this..

The A8 is a solid piece of engineering. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's like Maybach's using the S-class platform, absolutely nothing wrong with a properly built platform. The Galibier will be luxurious and fast at the same time. Lets not take grandma out for a nice dinner in one of these. The G-forces will give her a heart attack.

How does Agent63 get de-boosted? He's got a point. I doubt you could drive the car and notice the platform is derived from something else. It's not like anyone will say "geez, I'd throw away the Galibier even if I get it for free because it's based on something else".

Doesn't the Bentley Muslanne(sp?) share a VW/Audi platform? That's all internal hardware. What really matters in what you can see, smell, and touch.

I expect the Galibier to be instantly recognizable as a Bugatti. I expect to smell the aroma of some special leather appointments once the door opens. I expect to feel the soft leather and feel like the seats were specially formed for my own rear-end. All of the previous will sailing down the road on what seemed to be a cushion of sweet air.

No the Mulsanne has it's own platform that is brand new.You are confusing it with the Flying Spur(based on the platform of the Continental GT). Next point I doubt that VW is making much money on selling the Veyron. In fact they could be losing money on every one they build.VAG has so many choices and so much hardware. It's all about which bits go with which. The right ingredients can make a brilliant car. Therefore uses a platform from the A8 will wok just fine.

This is just brand engineering. A pretty body, some chassis upgrades, and voila, a $100K car for $300K. I think Abe Lincoln said: You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time. Of course, the world seems to be full of way too many people with more money than brains.

An Audi is an Audi, regardless of how it's clothed. Which is not to say an Audi is not a great car. It is, but it is not getting greater by putting on false airs and fancy bodies.

What Volks/Audi is really showing is that cars are just fungible commodities, interchangeable and replaceable. And they're hoping that nobody notices (or at least nobody that pays the premium for faux super-cars) that even the lower tier vehicles are superior, and that those upper echelon cars are just the same cake with different frosting.
