WOMPWOMP: Hugh Grant's Ferrari California Gives Out
You know, owning an exotic is not as much fun as it may seem. Especially when you've got a place to go!

Unfortunately for Hugh Grant, that's exactly what he found out when his Ferrari California crapped out in the United Kingdom. Although Ferraris have never been known to be the most reliable, it is kind of surprising to see a new California stranded.

Granted, the 458's didn't fair out so well in 2010...

The London Daily Mail reports that Hugh Grant got stranded on the roadside when his Ferrari California broke down. The actor was on his way to play golf at the nearby Royal St. George’s club stopped on the fast lane blocking other cars...

The mechanical innovation stuff aside... is it possible to make simple mends to that car with all the electronic stuff in the way?

Anyways, that California isn't exactly a pretty car, but it does look like a nice, cozy convertible GT.

Geeze, seems that "Womp" in the subject is a give-away sign of OOR drivel.

How I miss the days when Autospies was high on value content, and low on gossip-column style dreck like this.

You would think that after spending all that money that Ferarri would make it reliable.

Actually, that thinking is a sure recipe for disappointment. Most premium auto brands are *not* known for their lack of defects, and no exotics (e.g., Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc) are.

Would all of you be happy with an expensive un reliable car? There is a cool factor for sure, did I mention fun? I drove an old school 308 around one night, that was fun, my friend got rid of it because it was in the shop more than he drove it. If I had loads of cash maybe I might own one too? I would own something reliable too for when it breaks down.

truckman asks "Would all of you be happy with an expensive un reliable car?"

I speculate that the very affluent have a different mindset than us working class schmucks. For example, we have to be at work at an ungodly morning hour, so it's important for us to know that we can get in our car, turn the key, and there is a VERY high probability that it will start and get us to work and back uneventfully. Similarly, we lack boatloads of surplus income, so it's important to us to have maintenance have a non-punishing cost, breakdowns few, and repair costs not being "too expensive". In other words, we get a car because we need it, an hopefully, we can afford something we like.

Now put yourself into the mindset of someone who earns $3M per year, or say $20M from a movie every 3 years, and things look different. For them, it's a drop in the bucket to spend 5% of one year's income on a Ferrari. And you can bet that it's a toy -- because they can -- as opposed to having to depend on it. And if a Ferrari shows signs of trouble, call "your people" to have it transported to the shop and bring about another car for you. It's a different world, with different values, and with their thoughts on different things than us.

I hope Mr. Grant did not pull a "k-fed" and not change the oil.
