Lexus remains unbeatable in the U.S. luxury auto sales race
It appears that Lexus is unbeatable on the United States luxury auto market, as the Japanese brand secured the top spot for the 11th straight year. According to the official figures, Lexus sold 27,560 cars and sport-utility vehicles in December in the U.S. and an impressive 229,329 for 2010. Still, the brand’s sales fell 3.5 percent in December from a year earlier, but the sales rose 6.2 percent for all of 2010. As expected, the second place was taken by Bmw, which sold 9,216, less vehicles than Lexus.

ahh immaturity at its best.

Lexus 229,329
BMW 220,113
Mercedes 216,448
Acura 133,606,
Infinite 103,411,
Audi 101,629

They all met or broke their sales records. Good job to all, end of story.

Predictably, you left out Cadillac, which outsold Acura, Infiniti, and Audi with 146,925.

Yes take all the prius and camery based cars that will show them.

Keep in mind BMW is the only fully independent manufacturer on the list, next closest would be Mercedes. All the others are puppets to larger economy car corporations. Just to keep everything in perspective.

Yes i know BMW does co-develop certain components, like the 4 cylinder mini motors with PSA. But its done to a lesser degree than the other companies regardless.

The Acura components are developed by Honda their parent company. BMW develops the all of their car and SUV chassis independently along with a vast majority of their engines. Yes they collaborate with some companies on certain projects to reduce development costs. BMW has no parent company hence they are independent.

Everything I said is logically sound and true.

Which current BMW model use another companies platform?

"Honda as a corporation. Develops their transmssions, AWD systems..."

Acura only exists in America, so Honda is acura, but Honda is not a luxury brand. Is their an acura that cost over 70K? which is luxury car territory. So i will rephrase my initial statement, BMW is the most independent (luxury/premium) brand on the list.

plus honda teamed up with gm in the 90's..

Call me crazy.. I really don't understand what the attraction of a Lexus is. Not trying to be rude.. I just don't know anyone that owns one to ask the question.

you're crazy. Lexus might not be for everyone, but its positive qualities should be obvious to all: high build quality, above average reliability, quiet cabin, smooth running engine providing authoritative acceleration in near silence, comfortable seats, lots of convenience features, understated styling, pampering dealer service, a badge that impresses peasants... you know, _luxury_.
Enthusiasts don't care for it, but people who actually buy luxury cars seem to prefer it. Have you noticed how soft the new BMW's have gotten? People want what Lexus is selling.

... Lexus is basically everything that people like about Mercedes-Benz, with a lower price and better reliability.

I completely disagree I think Lexus caters to an entirely different crowd from MB/BMW they may not be a true enthusiasts choice but hey don't have to be they are for people seeking luxury first whereas BMW/MB are people that seek more sport of Luxury or 50/50.

They're all very understated... the Lexus buyer is someone that wants a little bit of everything... they have luxury, mild sport, are affordable, and easy to maintain. They aren't uber flashy, and don't really shine at anything in particular... they are kind of like Toshiba TVs... they do everything the Samsung does, but costs less, and may not have that one random extra feature...

I just had this revelation on the other thread.

But it sounds so good I want to say it again...From a mountain top.

BMW 220,000 V8 and I6 cylinder powered cars. Not one 4 cylinder. I don't think any of the other luxury brands can claim that, next would be Mercedes.

Lexus has one 4 cyl and it just was new for 2010...

and in case you havent noticed, all the brands are coming out with smaller displacements and vehicles in order to adapt to what the public wants. I believe a turbo 4 banger will be available in the C class next year in the states

94geo....the fact that BMW doesn't have a 4cyl. in the U.S. isn't very praiseworthy. The current iteration of the NA I6 is no better than a 4cyl. engine. And in some cases, less efficient.

And Volvo is another luxury carmaker that does not sell a 4cyl. engine in the U.S. The smallest engine they sell here is an I5 turbo.

With having said that, neither Volvo nor BMW make luxury cars but, premium cars.

"Did you see the recent announcment by BMW. Their next "SUPER" car is to have a 3 cylinder diesel.Did you see the recent announcment by BMW. Their next "SUPER" car is to have"

Yes, I did see that. They times are changing that is undeniable. I realize there will be small engines in the future and that is great I'm excited for it.

Everyone is squawking about sales figures, it is note worthy that BMW in 2010 was able to be only 9000 units short of lexus. Selling solely 6, and 8 cylinder cars.

"The current iteration of the NA I6 is no better than a 4cyl. engine. And in some cases, less efficient."

in some cases...and in other cases (example 335d) you get 40mpg and 0-60 in about 5 and a half.

BMW has pulled the greatest scam of the last decade 2000-2010. They did not sell all the cars that report shows as sold. They have been playing games all year (2010) with the finance boys in NYC & London. They coerce dealers to report sales that are not to end users. Under the guise of it keeps BMW AG's borrowing costs lower if the Wall Street analysts’ are pleased with the reported unit sales. The same game is going on at Mini to a lesser extent, but BMW NA has cancer, allot of cancer. Why else would the NADA dealer attitude survey of BMW dealers show BMW as dead last in the standings for all import brands? They, BMW NA have 25,000+ units reported in dealer inventory under the disguise of dealer demonstrators which count as sold units for BMW's purpose of reporting but in fact are not closer to driving the streets titled to owners then before the illusion of the sales numbers were published. BMW NA's yearly sales are lower by nearly an entire month from the real customer deliveries. All to keep the "Germans" happy and the financial guys playing the stock and ratings games quiet... The operation is one giant smoke and mirrors scheme and Jim O’Donnell should be ashamed of the mess he has knowingly created for the US market. He claims it is what Germany sent him here to do.....Could this be... it would be nice if someone reported the truth about this company instead of the lies they whip up for the consumption of the motoring press and financial analysts’.
Sometime soon they have to sell these cars…. When? It has not happened like they reported yet, so will they have a slow first quarter and quietly clean up the inventory debacle. Every BMW dealer in North America knows the numbers are false, say something.
Now that is the truth, debate it all you like, any dealer can do a country wide dealer demonstrator search on their DCS (dealer communications system) and get the real numbers of unsold cars to prove this post true. 3 series and 5 series units alone are more than 20,000 units unsold but reported as(dealer demonstrators) sold to the outside world… as of 1/2/2011

Luxury bargain
Acura's average transaction price through November trails those of other luxury brands. Lexus is near the bottom. BMW clearly leads true luxury car sales (+45K)

Lexus and Mercedes are seen as higher end and classier whereas BMW/Audi/Infiniti are sportier and more attainable.

BMW now has nothing to offer against GTR, R8, SLS, and LFA, from these other brands.
