We All Do It, But When SHOULD It Be Appropriate To Speed?

We All Do It, But When SHOULD It Be Appropriate To Speed?

On any given road, at any given time, the posted speed limit might be too fast for current conditions — or unrealistically low.

An interstate highway built in the 1950s for safe travel at speeds of 70-75 mph but with a posted maximum of 65 mph today is arguably underposted.

And the same road could be treacherous at 55 mph in January, after a heavy snow.

Most of us adjust our speed to match conditions — irrespective of the posted limit. We notch it down when it’s necessary — and often ignore the posted maximum when it’s below what strikes us as a reasonable, safe speed. But whether we get a ticket depends on how our speed stacks up to that number posted on a sign — whether it’s reasonable or not.

Seems to me that on a rural interstate 70-75 is the speed people migrate too regardless what the actual speed limit is and is ok in my mind. What isn't ok is people speeding by at more than 20-25 mph over the avg speed in an urban area - which just seems reckless, and what REALLY irks me is any speeding in a surburban/city area - especially in neighborhoods and around schools - usually these people are also yacking away on a phone - put it down and slow down - whatever you are doing can wait!

I understand, but there are always exceptions. One time my uncle was having a heart attack and the only people home were 10 years old. I don't even want to know how fast I was going to that house all while on the phone with the little girl calming her down. You never know why a person is speeding and you never know why they are on the phone. If I'm waiting for a call to tell me my results from a cat scan,I am going to pick up. Certain things are an exception.

B.S.

Inner City/ Urban areas are very densely populated with lots of kids, if you strike one of them while speeding and on the phone because you are trying to calm a 10y old, you deserve to spend a minimum of 10 years in Prison.

You cannot change the results of a CAT Scan so why the hell must you know the results right this second ?

Too many people overvalue their importance in this world hence our "Must Know Everything Right Now" attitudes.

Fact is there are few understandable reasons for increasing your speed in inner cities however you should offset the extra danger by concentrating 100% on the road.
Note: I do not consider going under 50mph as speeding as All German and Most American Vehicles can come to a complete stop in enough time and distance to make 50mph safe in inner cities.

For InterStates and Dual Carrigeways 70 - 100mph is fine for most automobiles {Weather Permitting}

It is an established fact that there are more accidents caused by boredom while driving and Cruise Control than by speeding, almost all of the videos in which you see a car colliding into a vehicle parked on the shoulder involved an activated cruise control system.
1-Drivers Attention is diverted to other things.
2-Drivers Foot is placed flat on floor and not over gas / brake pedal so reaction time is increased greatly and even greater chance of stepping on wrong pedal {Audi/Toyota Pedal Missaplication}.

This stuff is so simple yet the Cretins that govern us can't seem to resolve it.

I guarantee my Girlfriend is a much better driver than you are.

Never generalise, it makes you look silly.

As an insurance agent it is never appropriate to speed. I don't ever recommend breaking the law. However if you feel you must do so I would keep it within 10 MPH of the speed limit. Where I live I find most police give you a little speed cushion leeway of up to 10 MPH. However once that is breached 9 X out of 10 a speeding ticket will be issued. Further if your insurance company does a random check at policy renewal(which they do) you can get anywhere from a $75 to $200 surcharge on your insurance premium.Tickets for most companies now are surcharged from 3 to 5 years depending on the company. But hey it's your money and what ever your comfortable with.

why do you guys over charge so much? car theft is down and almost imposable today with theft deterrent systems and cars are at least 10x safer than they where just 10 years ago and insurance companies know it yet insurance rates are through the roof.

Groan, here we go again with another expert in road safety, self appointed and qualified to comment because they can drive and apparently have not had an accident when they have driven over the speed limit!

Yes it is inappropriate to drive at the speed limit when conditions say not to. What then are conditions that are acceptable to all that say the limit can be exceeded? It is more complex that applying the childish logic of "I went fast and no accident occurred so that's OK".

The roads have to be regulated so millions of drivers can do it all together and to be able to predict behaviour of others; one of those behaviours is controlled by speed management. Crude, yes, but essential to maintain order and safety on the road.

By all means drive at the speed of your choice up to a maximum that is at or about the speed limit; small excesses are of course expected. This maintains the order and predictability of traffic.

It is over-simplified and naive to analyse collisions caused by speed and more proper to consider its contribution to injury in collisions that have occurred for any cause.

When is it inappropriate to speed? When you have collided with someone else, that's when. Because you don't know when that is going to happen some form of speed management should be observed so when it does happen the injury outcome is mitigated.

When is it appropriate to speed? It isn't! If you don't like that; give up your driving licence and get off the road.

Really ?

So i guess Germany must have the highest vehicle related accidents per miles driven ?

It is actually exponentially less than in the UK and USA so that tells me it is the LCD princple.

If you force people to drive slowly, they will find other things to do to occupy themselves { Reading, Make-up, Sex, Handheld Cell Conversations, Eating }
While if you alow them to get on with Driving, they will soon find a sensible limit and concentrate 100% on the driving part of the journey.

Id rather have a highway full of people doing 110mph and concentrating 100% on the road { No Cruise Control Allowed} than one full of people doing 55-70mph on Cruise while only giving 55-60% of their attention to the road.

I totally agree with I95SPEEDINGTICKETS.

You do 80-90 MPH or above, belive me, both hands will be on the steering wheel with full focus on the road.

Germans always wondered why Americans wanted cup holders(for coffee)in their cars, they always scratched their heads at that one. Why? the average german can't phantom somebody doing 155Mph reaching down for a cup of coffee(I am exagerating here, but you get the point).

At 20mph and below in traffic we all have been guilty of doing something besides driving....

cup holders equal more weight, and more weight equates to less speed. lol
