Tell Me Why We STILL Need The UAW?

For some reason, few things get under my skin like talk from the UAW.

This month the union, which represents some 120,000 hourly auto employees at Ford, GM and Chrysler, will attempt to unionize workers at Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.

Rather than acting as a powerful advocate of U.S. labor laws, the UAW reminds me lately of a group of 8-year-old boys who aren’t getting what they want.

In a day of age with strict labor laws .. I really don't understand the need for labor unions.

Here in Canada, Unions simply ensure people (with no other skills) can keep working the manufacturing lines and get fantastic wages and benefits that are absent in almost every non-unionized enterprise. The costs have exploded that in essence they have forced organizations to move their operations overseas and push jobs away from North America.

you know first thing out the gate the republicans will try to defeat the universal health care law and give the rich insurance companies the right to refuse treatment to the sick and dying Americans. Looks to me they just unleashed the same "death squads" the accused the democrats of wanting to create. Truly it's a sad day when one of the most richest and powerful nations in the world cant or wont take care of it's own citizens when much of the rest of the world is doing this with ease.

First of all The United States of America was once one of the richest countries in the world. Thanks to the Dems it is now not. The universal Health Care Law that you think is so great would have refused treatment to many. And the rest of the world is NOT doing it with ease [name one that is without massive taxes]. This Universal Health Care plan that the Dems tried to ram down the throats of Americans goes against our constution. I will say this one time, IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE COVERNMENT TO SUPPLY HEALTH CARE. The USA takes care of its citizens by allowing them the freedom to persue there dreams either by starting there own businesses, to getting an education, and so on. There are millions of Americans that have prospered well in doing so. There are more people that migrate to the US because of this than any other country. Its called freedom my friend. The US Government is there for specific reasons but not to get in the way.

You are fantastically stupid.

Do you know that when GWBush {Republican} took over the White House from Clinton {Democrat} there was a huge surplus in the country's Finances.

By the Time GW Bush handed over to Obama that surplus was now the LARGEST DEFICIT IN US HISTORY.

So please tell me how the hell the DEMs caused the USA to go Broke ?

"By the Time GW Bush handed over to Obama that surplus was now the LARGEST DEFICIT IN US HISTORY."

To be fair, what happened in 2001 that prompted one of the largest overhauls of US security etc.?

Secondly, there was also a two-prong war, which was ****OVERWHELMINGLY**** voted for by both republicans and DEMONCRATS.

I am by no means a bush supporter, but lets put all the cards on the table before we make comparisons.

OBAMA is certainly not helping the deficit get any smaller........ is he?

He has pretty much taken everything bush did and amplified it. Tarp bailouts, healthcare(medicare D) etc.

Oh, Im sorry, i was under the impression that the house votes on bills placed in front of them and the speaker just signs if the majority wins.

I did not realise that Mrs Pelosi single handedly decided which bills were passed and which shredded.

Interesting that you claim Sep 11 attacks and katrina caused large deficits and somehow forgot to mention that the ASTRONOMICALLY STUPID adventure into IRAQ {A country with no links to terrorism before the US Invasion} Cost more than 3 Sep 11s and 4 katrinas could ever have cost.

The Iraq Adventure alone, if not entered into would have saved the USA over $750 Billion Dollars.

But no worries, more sensible to build depleted uranium tipped 50cal projectiles to shoot "Terrorists" with than to have free healthcare for your fellow americans.

Funny how as soon as Bush Got in to the White House, an event so shocking happened on US soil to allow all those calling for an Iraq Invasion for almost 5 years prior to take the helm.
1- Blame Afghanistan even though 14 of 19 Hijackers were Saudi { Not 1 word of questioning or warning to the Saudis to get their countrymen in check}
2- Link Saddam to Osama even though every human with half a brain knew that link was Bullshite {Americans lapped up every word}

I still remember that State of the Union speech, i sat there dumbfounded, thinking this fool just lost his job after making such blatantly stupid statements linking Saddam and Osama; instead what happened was wholehearted support from people who then happily sent their kids to go get killed.
I guess thats darwinism for you. I just feel sorry for those soilders who knew they did not want any part of that genocide but would have faced a court-martial for not going.

The Auto Manufacturers Bailouts were intiated by the Bush Administration
Mr Bush himself admitted as much in the last few weeks.

My opinion is that capitalism should be absolute if you are a proponent of capitalism i.e. let companies flourish and fail on thier own merit, without the bailout the US Manufacturers would have been able to get rid of the Union Shackles and rise again {Hopefully} the bailouts prevented that.

However this notion that governments never get anything right so they should not run healthcare.
Police, Armed Forces, Fire Depts, Schools........

These are all state run and while not beacons of efficiency are not complete shambles are they ?

Most important though is this question:
Without Government Requests for Weapons would Lockheed Martin and other weapons manufacturers be such Huge Entities or even in business at all.

Funny how when it comes to Weapons Building, Socialism is fine, but for Healthcare, Capitalism is a must.

Like I said, I was not a fan of Bush, especially in his second term. I try to think of myself as a fiscal conservative. If you remember, Bush authorized the distribution of billions of funds but left it up to Obama to distribute it. If Obama was so against it, he would have saved the money and cut taxes or use the money elsewhere. Fact is, he supported the Bush bailouts and hailed it as a "great success".

I reiterate what I said, Obama is an amplification of bush to the nth degree.

It's about money. . .
The head of the UAW makes a lot of it!!! And what does he do but talk?
I'm not a union worker, nor do I want to be. Why? Why would I want to pay for this guy to sit up there and do nothing to make all the money he makes that comes from my hard work???
And if I'm not working hard, the less reason to need him!

Bill, that's a hind sight bias. . . and I'm sure you don't know that it's fallacious reasoning. . .
Unions helped lead GM and Chrylser to bankruptcy. . . I said helped! Not that they were the only cause.

That is why we are the most richest and powerful nation in the world. Because we don't rely on someone else to take care of us. We innovate and create and work for profit!

Wrong target.
Sooner or later the marketplace will take care of of private sector unions if they get too far out of line.
The real target should be public sector unions who suck on the teat of the taxpayer with soft overpaid jobs, 100% job security and secure inflation indexed pension plans. That's what's killing the economies of all western social democracies..

"Intelligence is not a strong point on autospies"

So says the man who laughably claims the UAW "helped" the American auto companies! The same "uaw_lax that prefers that all our healthcare is administered by the same people who run the inept DMV, the Postal Service (bankrupt), social security (bankrupt) and Medicare (bankrupt). I suppose you also believed Obama when he told us Obamacare would be "cost neutral" as well? uaw_lax, as a member of the uaw you've already contributed to the injury of this country. We don't need your insults as well.

Do we need the UAW! LOL

This country needs more labor unions, in the past 20 years there have been a direct decline in US manufacturing and the US standard of living. The UAW while protecting jobs have kept there standard of living somewhat. Look at the non-union textile jobs that are gone the non-union furniture business that are gone. These are jobs gone for the sake of higher profits for the few at the cost of jobs for the masses. Intellectual jobs only create a hand full of jobs. look at all of the ipods, ipads, and iphones made in China thats great for the Chinese but i live in America

Yes, "upwards", I'm guilty. I do renew my license and register my cars with the DMV (as I'm required by law). And I do receive mail from the post office (though I prefer UPS and Fedex). I also pay Social Security taxes, though the program is destined to be bankrupt before I'm old enough to collect what I paid in. You got me. Nothing gets past "upwards".
