DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Is Porsche's Surprise THAT Spectacular Or Just 'Meh'?
There are two ways to characterize Porsche's big unveil this morning at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show:
1) WOW!
2) "Meh."
Apparently, our initial feelers out there are returning a very enthusiastic response to the 918 RSR or simply a less-than-impressed vibe.
Some of the industry's leaders are saying it is unbelievably beautiful and boasts some unreal technology while another is tweeting "I'm going to say a bit fat 'meh' for the Porsche 918 RSR Hybrid."
Talk about a difference of opinions.
With that said, where do you stand on Porsche's 918 RSR?

I believe, the meh reactions aren't over the car, they are over the surprise. It's hard to not like this car, (well except maybe for the fact that you have a potentially fatal spinning chunk of mass taking up your passenger seat). The car is definitely wow! but the surprise not so much, Porsche has already shown us a 918 spyder, and the hybrid system they implanted into the 918 was already shown to us. Technically, there is nothing new here, no spectacular surprise to be found at all. It would be like taking the corvette and tada! slapping a truck diesel into it for better fuel economy.

Also, this is obviously not something for production, at least not for the street and we have already seen the hybrid spinner on the track so where's the cheese?

Now give us a 928 coupe and it'll be a different story.

Not suprised ...I'm sure we could fix that by putting a Nissan or Infiniti logo on the hood and steering wheel.

Good God !!
That looks like a Flux Capacitor in the passenger footwell.
Or a Time-Warp Generator

To: THE best car maker on the planet
Familiarity does breed contempt (sometimes). Great job! And let the less than enthusiastic know you have to go back to work now tweaking the new Mulsanne.

Porsche used to stand for the "poor mans Ferrari".So what do we have here. Another hybrid concept car that admittedly is not bad looking but is not production ready and will cost 1/2 million or more when it is released. It's simply not my version of a spectacular surprise. Porsche you need to try again. How about a semi affordable production car. Then I might get a little excited.
