Is There A Market For This? Toyota Says A Prius Truck Is In The Cards

Could Toyota’s shelved A-BAT hybrid compact pickup truck concept return as a member of Toyota’s newly announced Prius vehicle family? Something similar could happen, according to Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager of Toyota Division at Toyota Motor Sales USA.

Toyota announced its new Prius family of vehicles today at the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In addition to the current Prius hatchback and Prius plug-in hybrid, the all-new larger Prius V (the V stands for “versatility”) and the sporty Prius C concept vehicle were shown.

Car-based pickups haven't been faring very well in the US these days, in spite of the fact that it is the birthplace of the El Camino and Ranchero. Chevrolet dumped the SSR, Subaru dumped the Baja, and Honda will be dumping the Ridgeline. There are countries where car-based trucks are very common and popular (South Africa, where they are called bakkies, and Australia, where they are called utes) so they could potentially tap those markets.

To the person thats always creating rediculous comments the Ridgeline is based on the Accord, its Pilot sourced chassis which also underpins the Odyssey and MDX was originally derived from the Accord.

Great alternative for those who need truck utility but aren't going to be hauling 3,000 lbs of payload or towing 11,000 lbs. not everry truck owner needs thos capabilities, as a matter of fact when has anyone ever towed that much in a half ton, yet people buy them for the numbers and the bragging rights. If you are towing more than 7,000 lbs get a ford superduty, ram HD or chevy HD.

I just hope it doesn't look like this concept
