DETROIT AUTO SHOW: Toyota Promises To Fix Ailing Scion Brand
Despite three years of lackluster sales, Toyota's Scion youth brand is not in danger of being shut down, Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda said.

“There is no concern, no danger for Scion in the future,” Toyoda said in a roundtable interview with journalists at the auto show.

Scion's U.S. sales dropped 21 percent last year to 45,678 units. Scion sold 130,181 cars in the U.S. market in 2007, and a record 173,024 units in 2006.

Hey didn't you know, Scion has an overweight new tC available now just in time for your daughters high school graduation! 180hp may sound like a lot for a little girl, but don't worry, the weight ensures she will not be competing in any races soon.

I do find it strange to note that they attribute recent sluggish sales to the younger demographic finding it hard to get a job and financing.

Last time I looked the demographic actually buying the brand was almost 50.

Almost like Cadillac saying slow sales were due to 20 year olds not having jobs.

You always say Scion has an older demographic, but never provide one bit of evidence backing that up. Just one non-anecdotal study, please.

thetruth01 - I am still looking for the "official data" but this is actually from a Scion fan site about the Xb.

21 or under 7.22%
22 to 30 24.06%
31 to 40 24.33%
41 to 50 19.52%
over 50 24.87%

The Tc I assume will be a bit more youthful.

It hard to tell the true age of the average Scion buyer since many are purchased by parents for their kids. Scion has the youngest demographic in the entire american car industry. That is a fact.

"Craig Taguchi, a Scion spokesman, disclosed that the brand’s average customer is 37 years old, the youngest in the industry. In fact, buyers of tC coupes are only 29 years old on average."

What is Scion? Who is there target demographic? Are they priced to the corolla? Those are the problems Scion faces.

Scion was the cheap younger alternative to the bland Corolla and Yaris. But what happened is they got bloated, and suffered from the "beige" bug at Toyota. I am not so sure about the old people buying them stint, I see loads of young guys and girls in the tC. Maybe it holds true for the xD or xA, dunno.

The car that was meant to be a stripper model for people to tune or make "their own" a la the MINI Cooper. Unfortunately they lost their way.

I think Toyota should've Not spend all the money creating the Scion brand. They should've spend it on developing and bring out a next generation Toyota Celica. The Celica was a good looking car but lack horsepower.

"Toyota can be successful at whatever they choose to do"

- I remember reading that here more than once.
