UAW Promises To Brand Foreign Automakers That Don't Unionize As Human Rights Violators

United Auto Workers President Bob King on Wednesday stepped up his rhetoric demanding that foreign automakers agree to avoid tactics that pressure workers to reject unions.

King, who spoke at the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit, threatened to "expose" companies that don't agree to fair bargaining as "human rights violators," but stopped short of calling for a possible boycott.

"I would not want to be a company that was branded as a human rights violator," King said, saying the damage from such a label could total hundreds of millions of dollars. "That would be a bad business decision."

@ Agent009: Notice their T-Shirts say: "Organize, Build Power & Win Justice". Can we please have a blog about renaming what their T-Shirts should REALLY say in this UAW picture.

They really voted in a hard core leader. The sad thing is that the companies he is targeting do have unions.. Just not in the US.

"They really voted in a hard core leader. The sad thing is that the companies he is targeting do have unions.. Just not in the US."

With that being said what cant these car companies give the same rights and wages to working Americans as they do to the workers in their home market?

They do! They have the right to vote in a union if they so choose. They always have had the right, but they haven't chosen to do so up to this point. The union leader only cares because he wants a cut of the money he's not currently getting from those workers.

Not true. This is what King is asking for, the right for the workers to decide for themselves without suppression or persecution no matter the outcome.

UAW- Can't you see this is blackmail? "You do what I say or I will ruin your reputation whether it is true or not"

I hope you can at least see that.

Most non unionized employees of Honda and Toyota already get paid the same(or better) than UAW employees....why would they want union representation. And yes these companies are against unions...who wants to be held hostage like the big three have in the past?

I'm not happy to hear this. Obviously the UAW is anti business. One rule should be put in place. That there should simply be a rule that says either "all" automakers in the US (including transplants) must hire 100% UAW workers or no UAW workers at all. There should not be a situation where one car company is saddled with UAW an another not. Further I don't beleive there should be separate agreements with the UAW and individual automakers. What ever agreement that is made should stand for all automakers in the US at the same rate or none at all. There can no longer be this inequality. Personally I think the UAW should just go away. But if it is here to stay then it should be Federal law that requires the UAW to have the exact same agreement with "All" automakers doing business on US soil.

What does this thread have to do with Obama? Some people will bash and blame Obama for everything, even if the subject isn't about Obama. You "fear"? That explains everything. Why do you "fear"?

last I checked this is a free market economy. No one should be forced to do ANYTHING. THose that choose the UAW can have it (I'm not sure if this has really EVER happened. I worked for auto companies and I know there is pressure to join the Unions. I never, adn will never join). If foreign company workers choose not to join the UAW, it is criminal to brand them human rights violators, after all, they are CHOOSING to not join. So explain to me Mr King how this violates ANYTHING?

What does the UAW have to offer? the destruction of Detroit, drunken and drugged workers? overblown tax-payer bailed-out pension plans?... its not like you even DESERVE the benefits. Most cars coming out of Detroit have underperformed for DECADES!!!!

MeanVulcan,

I didn't associate fear with Obama, Sportsbike80 did.

Sportsbike80 said: "I fear Obama is going to lead the UAW charge and unionize all car makers, hospitals, teachers, McDonalds employees, and Janitor at Walmart."

All I did was ask him why does he fear.

I fail to get your point. Or the point you were making doesn't apply to what I said.

"free market economy"

- An Oxymoronic term. The only thing free about a free economy, is the freedom that corporations have, to increase their bottom line by gutting the middle class.

Sportsbike, Obama may be pro union, but I don't think its in his plan to unionize all labor. He has not made any mention of it during his campaign and in any of his SOTU addresses. Plus it would be his political death knell....and if you're watching closely, he tries to lead from the center.

Unions are dying and all that help from dems is not going to save them.
They are dinosaurs, the quicker they disappear the quicker the economy gets stronger.
Godd riddance to all the unions.....

Crazy unions. One of the reasons I purchased my car is because it was not produced in a union factory. I'm not giving any of my money to support union officials and their ways.

Again - "predicatable" uaw_(ex)lax on a UAW blog topic. And again many negative responses. Are you a present or fomer UAW FACTORY worker?

Their T-Shirts say: "Organize, Build Power & Win Justice"

I think they should swap those T-Shirts for: "Will Strike; Smoke Pot & Drink on Lunch".

Are we still listening to the UAW? It's not like they really helped keep the car companies in business, they were some of the main causes forcing the car companies to take the bailouts.

Big deal UAW, GM tried to market itself in the 80's & 90's as building reliable transportation that was stylish and a true competitor to Japanese & European brands.

Marketing means nothing if consumers do not buy the message.

German, French, and Canadian health costs are borne by the goverment. Lots of our labor cost disadvantage comes from the world's most expensive health care system, a system entirely divorced from the "free market," but maintained by tax law and absurd insurance regulations.

I don't care which way you like it, a single country cannot have a two-tiered labor market and compete in the world-wide market.
