If THIS Audi Commercial Is Any Indication, It's Going TO Be One Hard-Hitting Super Bowl!
We've been saying for a while now, Audi marketing really has managed to catch our eye. Sure, some may argue that the whole Christmas lights gig was a bit "cheesy," but you have to admit that R8 Super Bowl commercial recreating The Godfather was pretty epic.

Building from that we see the release of a new spot that takes aim at the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. And to be pretty straightforward, it's a pretty good diss.

In fact, I'll let the commercial do the talking.

After you take a look at the commercial, let us know what angle you THINK Audi SHOULD take or WILL take for the upcoming Super Bowl spot?

**Special thanks to IamEvilHomer for the tip!

In an official marketing letter, Audi wrote:

Today, January 13th, we will launch our A8 TV launch campaign with our first spot called “Goodnight”. The basic premise of “Goodnight” is based on the timeless children’s bedtime story by Margaret Wise Brown. We have made use of the same tone of the book to say “Goodnight” to old luxury and all its wares and hello illumination, innovation and unending inspiration embodied by the new A8. The strategy for the spot relies on the fact that as consumers get older, they tend to associate positive memories to things in their past. It is time to put aside the old representations of luxury and progress with a the new, modern luxury sedan – the new A8. Luxury has indeed progressed.

Audi of America's YouTube page says:

The new Audi A8 says goodnight to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in this homage to a classic children's story.

Its the difference between those who are secure and those who are insecure.

Those who are trying too hard to "Be Accepted" will buy what they think those who "Are Cool" Drive.

Prestige !!!
In an S-Class

While there are Phantoms and Mulsannes around, the words S-Class and Prestige should not be mentioned in the same sentence.

It is the "it's never going to happen to me" attitude that is bringing down MB and BMW. Nice commercial. Strong message. Its only a matter of time, as it has been proven in almost every market outside of the US.

In this case "almost" means quite a bit as the S-Class remians the global leader in it's class for 50 + years.

LOL at people who eat this up.

BMW brand grew 14.6% globally in 2010
Audi grew 15% globally in 2010.

"Its only a matter of time, as it has been proven in almost every market outside of the US."

Its going to take an awful long time..BMW is growing at twice the rate of Audi in china.

Maybe if audi keeps pumping out some more vw polos/A1's they could close the gap. BMW is BMW. Audi will always be the little parrot on VW's shoulder.

Why are people on this blog so anti-Audi? All of my friends are BMW/Merc people but perceive Audi as the "next big thing" as they grow weary from those brands. If you've seen the A6 in person, you may realize it's better looking than the E-Class or the 5er. As far as the commercial goes, I think Audi has no choice but to battle the market giant in order to be noticed. That's what Hyundai/Kia is doing. David vs. Goliath

I don't think Audi will break down any S Class buyers any time soon, it might take some 7 series buyers away. But there's just something about the "S Class" that can't be killed off easily.

Dunno, but if the choice was an Audi or the old mansion and a MB, then I'm going for the latter.

What struck me about the ad was how fresh the Benz still looks and the new A8 looks like an Audi clone and already a little dated.

BMW has been doing the "I'm new, and innovative, and dynamic, and young, and fresh, and edgy, and techy" thing for quite some time. The 7 series is well entrenched. VERY well entrenched. So my thinking is that Audi is actually aiming at BMW drivers, as opposed to the slightly older, slightly more affluent, and slightly more conservative MB drivers.

Good luck, Audi! And I mean that in a NICE way, though *I* won't be placing any large bets on that, any time soon.

Kinda funny but between the 3 German makes, Audi's cars are actually the most "German" in appearance, i.e. dry, functional, solid, like a German tank. MB used to have their cars as such but no longer (although I get the sense that their most recent E and C are trying to get back to that bank vault appearance). BMW cars have always had a bit of a flair in them. Not saying which direction is better or more appealing, just a general observation.

I'm Not a MB fan but I like to give credit where credit is due, that white MB S-Class look just stunning in that video. And from the exterior look alone the MB S-Class blown that stretch Audi A4 (I mean A8 out of the water.) I take the MB S-Class any day of the week. I like Audi but that new A8 look just like a Stretch A4 with different headlights.

I've went through every one of your comments and EVERY ONE of them has a hateful attachment to it! To me, sounds like you chumps are intimidated by PROGRESS!!! Audi is, and will be the best automaker on the phase of this planet for many, MANY years to come! Have a comment, hit me up! This sounds like all those Kobe hatred out there still stuck on Jordan (Old Ass) hating on progress when it comes to Kobe doing his thing! Jordan (Mercedes) ruled for awhile, but it's time for Kobe (Audi) to rewrite this league and that's what's straight happening here! GOODNIGHT BENZ-BMW!!!

The A8 is lame it looks like an economy car on the outside. The S class is the better car, and its toward the end of its life cycle! When the new S comes out the A8 will look even more like an A4. Even the 7 beat the A8 in a comparison test already.

Do you know why? Because it look very similar to the current Audi A4 that has been for awhile now, this A8 look like a stretch Audi A4, period.

I love Audi and would love to own an Audi RS5 or Audi R8 with a V8/V10 engine, easily one of the most beautiful car on the road.

It's he MAC vs PC battle. Yes the PC may win the market share battle but the MAC is just a more desirable and modern product. All you Audi haters have been kicking and screaming for the past several years watching Audi come out with one great car after the next while steadily gaining market share. Your kicking and screaming has not and will not change that. If you see the S and A8 side by side, you will realize that the S, while still a handsome car, looks dated and somewhat baroque compared to the very modern and sleek looking A8. The S class is the equivalent of a middle aged person who is beyond their prime and is starting to look a little heavy in the midsection but still tries to dress as if they're 10 years younger, and maybe resorts to plastic surgery, to try to hang on to the past. The A8 on the other hand is the middle aged person who has been taking care of themselves all along, staying fit and looking younger than their age.

You may think the S and 7 look better but it's a matter of taste isn't it? I think the design language Mercedes is using lately is somewhat overwrought and does not represent what I think German automotive design should be. The CLS is a clear example. In a way, the design language Mercedes is using is not much different from what Hyundai is currently producing. Many might like it, but many do not. The 7 series on the other hand looks somewhat "lumpy" for lack of a better word. It lacks the sleekness I look for in a car. Audi's cars have that modern sleek look I personally prefer. Others might think they're plain looking. In the end, there is room in the market for all three brands since they represent quite different design philosophies and will generally appeal to different people.

Here's one for thoughts: what if the A8 came out BEFORE the A4? Then people would say, look - the new A4 looks like an A8! Most other manufacturers "trickle down" their designs. For instance, Maybach, S-Class or BMW 7, 5 , then 3. Heck, even the Euro Passat inherits the Phaeton look!

Ok.. lets cut to the chase:

The purpose of a commercial is to generate awareness and interest (that would hopefully get people into the showroom). A commercial you forget after watching it cannot be described as an effective commercial. This commercial is generating a heated discussion so it is an effective commercial regardless of your car preferences / taste.

Styling is subjective and related to personal taste. Don’t see the point of trying to convince others a car is beautiful or ugly, especially via posted comments.. To me and many others the Aztek was an ugly beast, but someone designed and built it..presumably they thought the car was stunning! What were they thinking? Sorry I meant to say beauty is relative and can be contentious so just state your preference and move on. For example, I’m an Audi fan, but I prefer the exterior look of the S-class (just my preference). At the same time I prefer the artwork high quality interior (by a mile) of the A8 and its performance /handling package.. but someone else may feel differently and that’s Ok. Buy what you like and let others do the same.. Now for the car companies. While I am not excited about Audi’s commercial (the god father was awesome..this is just there), the message is clear and relevant. Mercedes used to be king, but all good things have to end at some point.. They have continued to churn out the same stuff over the past 10 years nothing groundbreaking except huge incentives to move cars (look at their margins) and their progress is now clearly reflected in the number of people who buy their cars globally.. BMW on the other hand has also punished its margins but they’ve blown Benz away, and with a major product offensive, Audi is on the verge of doing just that; and that’s the message in the commercial! Agent00R and others who can think get this, I don’t expect everybody to….You can argue all you want but here are facts with real numbers:.

Mercedes has not grown in 10 years, and BMW and Audi are annihilating them from all angles. They sold 1.11 Million cars in 2000 and 1.16 Million cars in 2010. Sorry, I meant to say that in 10 years they’ve managed to increase their sales by 50K+ cars..very impressive!. For BMW, its BMW 881K and 1.22Mill respectively and Audi 762K and 1.09MM. Like Dinosaurs Mercedes’ time has come and gone and unless they come up with something innovative & landscape changing, they’ll still be hanging on to 0.5% growth over the next 10 years. BMW now reigns supreme, but Audi has momentum and is on the attack. More important, Audi they are not growing by giving their cars away so their growth is real versus artificially growth that is not sustainable (the crisis of the past two years prove this) We’ll see what the next five years hold. For the record, growth in the past 5 years its BMW 1.7% and Audi 7%.

Ugly industry secret is that Audi actually sold more cars than Mercedes as of spring this year.but Mercedes had a very strong later half of t
