NHTSA Mandates New Protection Measures For Unbelted Passengers
Passenger vehicles will have to keep occupants, even those not wearing seatbelts, from going through the side windows during a rollover, according to a new regulation announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Thursday.

"Safety is our highest priority," transportation secretary Ray LaHood said in an announcement. "This new standard will help save lives and reduce injuries by requiring vehicles to have a safety system that keeps occupants in the vehicle in a rollover crash."

I have a better idea... mandate rear seat belt usage.

If they ignore the simplest of all safety measures then they deserve what is coming their way.

How idiotic - place the burden on automakers when people fail to accept responsibility in wearing safety belts.

The branch of the government is convinced it can legislate safety INSPITE of the morons out there.

Wait till LaHood figures out that cars are hooked up to the internet....

I have a better idea: to forbid people to die or to get hurt in car accidents... pedestrians inclusive.

What about mandating protection measures for motorcyclists that are not wearing a helmet? Or demand ESP be programmed for cars with worn out tires and brakes (AND are overloaded AND underinflated)? Front cameras for people who have a cracked windshield but refuse to replace them? I think the NHTSA should consider hiring me!

I wish the folks over at NHTSA pulled their heads out of their a$$. Lets spend government money creating mandates and standards that make absolutely zero sense. Sounds like a good plan!

Having seen an unbelted 8 year old fly out of a truck window and decapitated as it rolled, I can understand the motive for the standard. Easiest solution, however, has already been enstated. Drivers have a responsibility to make sure everyone in the vehicle have there seatbelt on, or else be ticketed for it. Bottom line.

Sorry that you had to witness something like that. I even have a hard time understanding why we need to ticket people for not doing what's best for them/their family! It's the easiest thing you can do to improve your chance of survival and if people don't think it's worth the effort, let them! Ranting, but every time I get into a car, the first thing I do is buckle up...should be a reflex after a while.

I think we should have tougher intrusion beam, actually a full chromolly cage, especially for side impact.
