CONFIRMED: Subaru Version Of FT86 To Be Rear Wheel Drive
Subaru’s new Coupe is go! The Japanese firm has confirmed that a concept version of its long-awaited Coupe, jointly developed with Toyota, will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. No pictures have yet been released, but our exclusive renderings give you an idea of how the newcomer will look.

What’s more, the firm has confirmed that the car will be built on an all-new platform, and while the Coupe will feature Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed boxer engine, it won’t get the firm’s symmetrical all-wheel drive. Instead, like to Toyota model, it will be rear-drive, giving the firm a rival to Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe in the US market.

Looks pretty good. I think it is a mistake to not offer this in AWD form, will lose lots of potential sales!

Have to disagree on that one. If we are moving to a CAFE standard of 35mpg in less than 5 years...well Scooby has to pick it up. Because none of there cars can do that right now. Any easy way to help is to sell more of a cheaper car to offset the numbers. And rear wheel drive weighs less than AWD so I have a feeling with the engine they are putting in, tuned for efficiency and combined with a lighter chassis...they should make closer to 35 mpg.

And Subaru knows exactly who their market is with this. To be honest I wouldn't be surprised if WRX and STi sales fell because of this vehicle. True AWD is pretty nice to have but lets be honest AWD + Summer tires = no traction in any inclement weather conditions. And most people dont rally their vehicles, so why get AWD. Its just extra weight and a less sensitive steering capability. If the choice were FWD vs AWD it would be a different issue, however RWD to AWD comes to a wash with enthusiasts. And Non ehtusiasts wont care, as long as they can get one in pearl white.

I think they will do just fine with this vehicle.

I agree with the above post. Subaru has forever been considered the go-to AWD brand. Withought AWD, there is segment of the market will feel abandoned...as if Subaru is moving away from their original MO.

Not good.

Maybe they will offer an STi type variant with their AWD as an option...I hope.

So do they have to change their marketing since they claim that "all their models have AWD".

What is this going to have that you can't already get in a Camaro/Gennie Coupe/Mustang?

If this two vehicles is meant to compete with the Nissan 370Z, Hyundai Genesis coupe, Mustang etc..., it will probably have two variant one with around 220 hp and another with probably around 300+ hp. Car and Driver said it around 180 hp and a turbo version with 230 hp.

And I think both of this cars are going to cost around $27,000 to $34,000 for a fully loaded top end model with 300+ hp, if they plan to give it that much horsepower.

What does everyone up here think?

unless it's built in Indiana, it will have to be in the price range you posted. Maybe it's the same size as a Yaris?

Subaru is not abandoning it's AWD mantra. This is if anything would bring in new customers who want a 2 seat type sportscar. The people that like AWD will simply by the WRX and other models.
