VIDEO: 2012 Hyundai Veloster On The Road And Seen In Action
If there was one car that impressed us at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, it was the 2012 Hyundai Veloster.

Although a lot of Spies commented on its questionable looks, we think that its forward-thinking design will be embraced down the road. It may take some getting used to at first but when competitors are putting out conservative looks, like the 2012 Honda Civic Concept, we question if that's what buyers are looking for.

Also, it doesn't hurt that the car has nearly 140 horsepower, plenty of interior space and is estimated to achieve 40 MPG at an estimated price of $17,000. It's a very tidy package.

With that said though, we've got some video footage of the car on the road. Unfortunately, it's not a city environment, but we'll take what we can get...

On Monday, we got our first taste of the all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster at the Detroit Auto Show. Now, we have the first video footage of Hyundai's unconventional small sports car, which is distinguished by its asymmetric body with a single door on the driver's side, two doors on the other and a rear hatch...

I would have to agree and my question is Why did they have this THING covered up and camo-ed the past few months???????? I thought it was going to have more of the VW Scirocco desgn to it but this thing looks like a scirocco threw up....TWICE....after all the hard work they put into the Genesis and the EQUUS they go and do some dumb shyt like this. well Hyundai had me fooled with this car until now. Im good on it 100%

I like pretty much everything except that bulky back-end, and those strange tail lights.

The general shape is good. In fact from the side and rear the Veloster picks up a lot of Scirocco que's. 1st there is the subtley sloping roof and the small rear window with the spoiler at the top.2nd is the way the rear side window sweeps into the c pillar. Also the side spoiler is very similar to the Scirocco. Finally the way the rear panels bulge over the rear wheels and even the tail lamps shape are clearly influenced by the Scirocco. The only areas that the Veloster is dramitiaclly different is in it's overly fussy front end design(which I did not like at first but am gradually warming up to) and of course the extra door on the passenger side(which I thing is brilliant engineering). I'm hoping Hyundai will do a mid cycle refresh on the front grill and headlamps. If the car handles or performs have decently then it is a great buy for the money. The interior center console reminds me of the Ford Focus. With it weighing in at around 2600LBS it should hit 0-60 in around 8 seconds or less. From the video the car also seems to turn in well with little body lean. It will be interesting to see what Hyundai learned in steering feel from the VW Scirocco.

My 2007 Civic has 140hp already, but 40 American MPG is great, and I love the hatch back, I wish my Civic had that, this car isn't pretty and for me its function over fashion, if I wanted a car to look good I would buy a BMW, the grill needs some work if one would want it to look good.

While I think the styling in not complete, I do appreciate the idea.

I can't help but think that the Honda CR-Z should have been a more like this model.
