Still Getting It Wrong? Study Says We Want More Crossovers NOT Small Cars
This week, the public gets a close look at the small cars being introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. But make no mistake, says analyst Rebecca Lindland of IHS Automotive, the small car segment isn't as vibrant as it may seem.

Lindland is one of the most impressive analysts on the automotive scene. She says don't get hung on the growth in small car offerings. Rather, compare sales and market share of small cars to boxy crossovers, the vehicles that the public really seems to want.

Those are bullshit statistics, as is the case most of the time anyway. In the grand scheme of things those numbers are not saying anything at all, other than some people want crossovers to do what crossovers do, and some want small cars to do what small cars do. I don't think any manufacturer is putting small cars on the market as competition for crossovers so if money can be made selling both, car companies will do just that. What Lindland isn't saying is just how many new crossovers and how many new small cars were unveiled last year that led to the numbers she quoted. Let's be honest. There are far more and far better looking/performing crossovers on the market than small cars. This study also does not say that people WANT more crossovers. It merely said that people BOUGHT more crossovers. There is no evidence that the existence of one event, has to mean the other.

I would rather have a cross over if it had the same economy, then again If I didn't have to commute 5x a week I would drive a truck again, there is so much I can't do with a car.
