BMW May Be Planning To Shelve Base 6 Cylinder Powerplants And Replace With Turbo 4 Cylinder
BMW gave its new 6-series its public debut in Detroit - but the big drop-top was overshadowed by news of the firm’s forthcoming 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant, which will appear in the X1, Z4 and even the 5-series later this year.

The four-cylinder unit, meanwhile, is seen as an indirect replacement for the least powerful version of BMW’s classic 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine.

The output numbers are truly impressive, I would love to see what this felt like in any BMW model or any MINI for that matter...

I hope not. Their normally aspirated I6 is a gem of an engine. I would have a hard time paying BMW's premium for a four banger.

Others have already done so.

They should move to a 2.0L turbo'd inline 6 instead. 4 cylinders are too crude.

So let me get this straight. When BMW offers a turbo 2.0L and it puts out 242hp that's impressive? Really?

Engine refinement in the inline 4 configuration is more important than the power output especially in the luxary segment. BMW's 4-cylinder diesel engine is powerful but noisy and coarse. To complete with MB's 1.8L turbo and the old 1.8L compressor, BMW needs to work more on the engine refinement as well. Audi's 2.0L TFSI, which is using in my A3 is coarse most of the time. In my opinion, this TFSI should not be used in any Audi vehicles.
