Full Size Luxury Sedan Comparison by Motor Trend
The guys over @ Motor Trend have put up this mega 11 page comparison between the large sedan offerings from all the usual suspects in the large luxury sedan game. But they didn't just make this a booring old comparison, they threw in all the non-traditional offerings that are available from automakers you wouldn't have expected 10, 5 or even 1 year ago.

Why all these large luxury sedans in this economic climate anyways? Despite the bad economy, almost every automaker has refreshed their luxo offerings and have pushed the bar foreward even more, blurring the lines between cars meant to be driven by yourself and those meant to be driven by a chauffeur. This isn't all that surprising-- before the big economic collapse, every automotive analyst and pundit declared the high end luxury market as the one which would see the biggest and most profound growth, and no doubt plans were laid for these cars in that climate. And so now, the competition has become fierce.

Motor Trend set out to compare these cars, head to head and see who is king amongst kings. First place, with the title RELUCTANT CONQUERER went to our favorite BMW 740i.

Here is a rundown on the cars which were compared and how they scored in the comparo:

1. BMW 740i
2. Porsche Panamera
3. Audi A8
4. Lexus LS 460
5. Jaguar XJL
6. Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid
7. Hyundai Equus

Here are some select quotes on what Motor Trend had to say about these cars:

BMW 740i
Quote:
Prestige, panache, and style? BMW may not outrank Mercedes-Benz or Porsche when valets compute the mental tip calculus that determines which car gets parked closest to the entrance, but the Roundel identifies its owner as someone who cares more about driving than arriving.

Porsche Panamera
Quote:
But it's in the handling department where the Panamera really distinguishes itself. "Forget a gun at a knife fight, Porsche's brought a bazooka to a bake sale," says Febbo. Not only is this the smallest and lightest car here, it's also the only one that makes no pretense of providing a plush ride.

Audi A8
Quote:
The interior design and materials won us all over, prompting this gush from Febbo: "I'm convinced I'm in a car from the future. The interior of this A8 is a mix of 'Tron,' Apple, and a luxury space yacht."

Jaguar XJL
Quote:
Right-brain thinkers may be excused for disregarding everything we write about the other six cars and simply rushing out and grabbing one of these, so strong is its emotional appeal -- or repulsion.

Hyundai Equus
Quote:
But even ETs will admit the design, inside and out, is derivative and bland, and while the quality of the leather and wood trim will wow folks moving up from a Genesis (or TL or G37), the S-Class/7 Series buyer will sniff cost savings. There's no innovation here, as associate road test editor Carlos Lago wrote: "Hyundai has painted by numbers, while the rest have attempted making art."

If I had a gun to my head, and HAD to get 4 doors, it would be the Panamera. Yummmmm :-)

Have to agree with the BMW placing 1st, even though it doesn't place first in any of the evaluation categories listed. The LS would be next. Having the Hyundai there is blasphemy!

I sat in inside an Equus the other day. I had an open mind but realized that the interior is just not up to par with the others. Even Hyundai's Genesis has a better finished interior.

i had the same thought you had when i sat i one at the autoshow but i also seen the lines of lemmings setting in the same car smiling and with amazement. (scary stuff)

To me the big story here is that the Equus is even in the story. WOW! That is incredible. Sure they are last, but they are mentioned. And this is with the 'big boys'. Infiniti, Acura, Cadillac -- nope, not here. Hyundai is, that is the underlying story that I see.

overall, it's a pretty ridiculous comparison. comparing hybrid models to inline 6 models to V8 models.

though i personally like the 7 best, this comparison is silly.

to base a test on just the entry level trim of this class is very misleading and doesnt work, because the entry level of the S-classe is not an S400 Hybrid. The S400 Hybrid may be the lowest priced, but it is not the entry level.

Also, as you had mentioned, it gives such a wide range of cars, from Hybrids to V6s, to V8s, naturally aspirated, force induced, etc, the variences goes on and on.

furthermore, NOBODY is cross-shopping this set of cars. when equipped the same, the price range is enormous between, say, the hyundai and the panamera. on that note, does ANYONE actually believe that the panamera buyer is considering a hyundai or even a lexus?

Interesting, but good comparison test. The BMW won because its performance equaled the lighter V6 Porsche in a straight line, it was better balanced around corners than the AWD Audi, and its technology was the easiest/most intuitive to use out of all the cars. Basically it was the most well rounded car in the group.

'Cars in this class should be technology leaders, but they need to be user-friendly. After several generations of Sevens, BMW is getting that second part right. The latest button-ringed iDrive infuriated far fewer of us than Audi's shifter and MMI or Jag's pokey touch screen, though it trails the big-button/touch-screen Lexus and Hyundai interfaces."

The "big-button/touch-screen Lexus and Hyundai interfaces" may be easier to master when the car is parked, but these same interfaces become a major distraction while driving. Imagine having a dedicated button for every one of the functions in these cars and trying to find a particular button while driving? Also, touch screens have no tactile feel and require the driver to look at the screen for substantial (in driving terms) amounts of time to find the right button to push. What works in a parked car doesn't necessarily work while driving.

because that would go against the value-positioning of lexus. you can't innovate in design and technology on a regular basis AND be value-priced. plus lexus buyers don't really care about either design or technology....there's a reason you can still get a cassette player in a lexus.

Are you out of your mind enthusiastx11? Lexus has introduced a number of innovations as well as a number of new vehicles and segments others have tried to imitate. There is a reason they are the top selling luxury maker in North America.

ok, what are those technology innnovations? and that doesn't change the fact that their design language is entirely derivative and model lifetimes are stretched far beyond the norm without significant updates.

@enthusiastx

I absolutely agree with you. Because refreshing models yearly, facelifting models every two years and bringing out new models not past 5 years would not be cost effective to a company built on being cost-effective.

+15 if I could.... LMFAO on the cassette player!!!

@David,

Give me a bread. The reason they are the top selling luxury maker in North America is because of their price point, not their innovations.

black: here's a newsflash for you: products that cost 30-40% less sell more volume. price the LS anywhere near the S-class and sales would plummet.

and the LS sells well because it's a quiet, soft luxury car that's value priced. retirees LOVE these things.
